GazetteOnline.com : Corbett didn't have the needed 6 votes to oust Prosser; but Prosser backers Podzimek and Wieneke say

I am very sad that Jim Prosser is leaving CR we are losing a great Manager. CR VOTED to have a strong manager system. Now we have a Dictator Mayor and his sycophants. Corbett is nothing but a power hungry bully that will eventually get a weak Manager of his choice hired on so he can tell him what to do and they will cower. Prosser was only trying to be fiscally responsible to the citizens of CR and to be a level head when Corbett proposed all his money draining projects. Corbett wants to build ampitheaters and convention centers and all these great things that CR does need... BUT we first need to rebuild from the flood and replace some badly damaged infastructure. Then we can add the icing.

GazetteOnline.com : Linn County to mull second amphitheater proposal

I think the Marion location is a great idea! Amphitheater's need to be away from noise and distractions. It would be a very easy drive as well. Get off on County home... turn on 10th and voila! There would be no one way streets and traffic to deal with. Where CR is proposing it is a horrible location. it would be close to factories and downtown. Plus the parking would be horrible. If CR could come up with a better location I think more people would be for it. And also if the (dictator) whoops I mean Mayor Corbett... whould have proposed it openly instead of shoving it down everyone's throats he would have had a better response. Linn county is MORE than just Cedar Rapids.

Paid very Nicely? Hmmm? Maybe management does but not the guy out there picking up your trash or doing the other dirty jobs. Yes they have a pension but they pay into it 10% of their gross each pay period. The pension at my work does not cost me a dime. Maybe you should walk a day in your trash collectors shoes before you spout some more.

Yes it is their job and I think they do a great job and deserve more respect than they are given. These people are your friends and neighbors. They do thankless work and expect to earn a decent wage for it. Next time you need a city service I hope they do not PUSH themselves too hard to help you. But I am sure if they do give you the quality service you pay for and deserve as a city tax payer... You will be 1st in line to go out and thank them won't you? Probably not... you will just continue to breed more contempt for these people that are just trying to make a decent living and raise families in our wonderful city.

OT worked during the floods was MANDETORY. It is same with any other disaster. They are required by contract to work. There were several city workers that had homes in the flood area that had to be at work instead of saving their own home. Lazy bums... I have a few more examples that I have seen of laziness in the city. Picking up YOUR nasty garbage. Lazy...Going down into the sewers filled with filth and roaches to repair or open a line. Really lazy...Plowing snow for 16 hours straight on Christmas while your family is at home. Oh the horror.....Diving down in 12 feet of murky river water to cap off a storm drain during the worst flood in our history. Crazy lazy. Standing out knee deep in freezing cold water in the middle of winter to repair a burst water line. Certifiably crazy...And many many lazy acts that I can not remember. Oh yeah and try doing all this while the people around you are sneering and yelling that you are a lazy.... Yes there may be a few employees that do not work as hard as others... but show me ANY job Gov. or private that does not have this issue.

GazetteOnline.com : Transportation secretary says he misspoke on advice to Toyota owners

Yeah right... I am sure that every Toyota owner has two or three cars just waiting in the wings to be used as a back up. Not drive your only means of transportation? Is Toyota going to reimburse people for cab fare, bus fare or lost wages because they are now terrified to drive their cars? I think not.

GazetteOnline.com : Corbett in the middle of BBQ dispute

The BBQ Roundup has been a CR tradition for as long as I remember. Please don't ruin this tradition. Moving it to Labor Day will kill it. The Freedom Festival needs to step back. How would they feel if another group pulled this stunt on them and planned the same events as they do at the same time? As far as the green square park thing.... Uptown Friday nights does enough damage to the grass. Why care if the Round Up is held there? Sounds like someone from the Freedom Fesitival has an in with whoever decides what is held there. If the Freedom Festival needs to have this event then they should have it on Labor Day.

GazetteOnline.com : City Council to work on "buy-local" resolution, spending oversight

So the City of CR is to only buy local. That is Corbett's ideal socialist CR. But still the residents of CR flock to other nearby cities to shop because Lindale and Westdale are a joke. Interesting. Next thing we know there are going to be ID cards and a big concrete wall to keep out all the Non Cedarrapidians...cause somebody from another town might use one of Cedar Rapids "wonderful" resourses like their great roads, theatre's, library's, resturants, parks....etc... Maybe you should start charging everyone that does not live in CR to even come within the city limits I bet that would really help. Oh yeah and by the way CR... don't come ask for help from Marion or Hiawatha or any of your neighboring towns next time you flood.

GazetteOnline.com : Cedar Rapids woman sues Bayer over side effects of birth control pill

I am not trying be mean here but.....BC pills have ALWAYS carried a risk of stroke and blood clots. No matter which brand. The fact of the matter here is that she was putting a pill in her body to alter her normal body function. Anytime we CHOOSE to put a substance in our body that is not natural we take a risk. If I was sitting on the jury for this one I would be pissed that I had to take time out of my life and that it was a waste of the taxpayers money. I really do feel sorry for her pain but with ALL medications there are risks and side effects... even some that are not listed.

Areyousure, I am sorry you took it that way. I was not saying that people did not need or deserve help. What I meant was that.... these folks have had 18 months of assistance already. And from the way the story was written it seems that they are still looking for a handout. I agree with helping people in need. But there also needs to be limitations. I was not trying to judge it just frustrated me when this story was printed and we are supposed to feel bad but yet bad things happen to good people every day. And this story was just so insane. Everybody that lives in CR know that there is affordable housing. It is like they are just trying to prolong their welfare.

They chould be thankful they got anything at all. We lost everything we owned to a fire and nobody stepped in to help us. My mom was severly burnt and spent 5 months at the U of I. My parents were renters did not have insurance. My dad and my brother and I lived in our car until we could find a new place to live. My family rebuilt our lives from the ashes of my parents dreams. It made me a stonger person and to not look to other people to take care of me. I fail to see why we should continue to put these folks up. It makes me sick that some people continue to wait for a handout instead of taking the reins in their own life.

Most of the comments to this story are stupid. Hello... follow the rules folks. Don't speed... pay your insurance.... don't run red lights... don't drink and drive....etc.... these are all obvious ways to not get a ticket. Quit complaining about how unfair this city is to you and have some pride. Cedar Rapids is a great place to live. Otherwise why are you here? In fact... if you do not like it here. I welcome you to hit 380 and keep going... Deal with the changes, change your driving habits and this will not effect you. Period.

GazetteOnline.com : City driving hard bargain with 3 employee unions

I have no idea why people continually seem to think that the people that work for the City of Cedar Rapids should be paid a sub standard wage for their work. Most of these people do thankless work and are treated poorly by the public while they try to do their jobs.____I ask you this...why should they not be paid a fair wage? Do you think they are beneth you?____Would you feel differently if your sewer were backing up and nobody came to help? Or how about if your house was on fire? Or if your street was clogged with 2 feet of snow and no help was coming? Maybe the city should just let your trash pile up on the curb? These are esscential services that our city provides for us to make our lives easier. ____I sit at a desk all day long in my nice heated and air conditioned office and I make more than a guy that bust's his back all day going into manholes to make sure that everyones waste is flowing properly. I make more than the guy lifting my gross trash can. I make more than most rookie Police Officers.____Who has the crappier job? Not me. So I do not begruge these people's rewards for their toils. ________
