They're using the Skullgirls engine. They AREN'T using all of Skullgirls' mechanics. It's like saying "Why did anyone bother buying Arkham Asylum when Gears of War had already used that engine just fine?"

When I saw the Snips and Snails opening gag, I was a little afraid they would somehow be the winners in a "Bet ya didn't see THAT coming, audience!" style twist.
The entire episode could have dwelled on who the winner would be so hard that it would be much like Twilight placing high in the Fall Weather Friends race.
