i read this somewhere upthread, but i can't remember who said it: they suggested that if movie!touga had lived, and gotten to develop into a teenager, that he would have become the touga we see in the show. it was the fact that he died young that he managed to retain his goodness. i'm not actually sure how i feel about movie!touga's backstory yet, or whether i want to retroactively apply it to the show or not, but i thought this was worth mentioning.

also, feel it's important for me to say that i used to have no interest in anime whatsoever. i'm not even sure why. maybe my first boyfriend forcing me to watch dragonball z with him while we were on the phone with each other soured me on the whole art form (joking but not? ha!). i decided to watch princess tutu with this site cos i was coming off watching buffy/angel/dollhouse with everyone, and i had had so much fun that i wanted to continue interacting with the community. long story short, because of this site i have now watched princess tutu, fullmetal alchemist: brotherhood, and revolutionary girl utena, and THANK GOD I DID because i absolutely love all 3 of them so much (i tried to watch baccano! but the amount of characters and interweaving stories only served to frustrate me, and i gave it up, sadly). furthermore, all 3 of those shows shot up near the top of my list of all-time favorite shows ever. i feel indebted to this community for turning me on to these absolutely wonderful shows. i guess i just wanted to say thanks.

this might be a silly question given the surreality of the movie, but, if touga is dead, how are he and shiori able to have a sexual relationship? are shiori and utena the only ones who can see touga since they both knew him when he was younger, before he drowned?

well, that was fucking weird, but i sure as hell enjoyed the ride! (get it? cos utena turns into a goddamn car.) i'm mostly speechless, and if i hadn't already seen the show, there's no way i would have had any clue what was happening in the movie, but the animation itself was superb. i found myself just staring at the screen, searching it over for details and then realizing that i had missed several lines of dialogue (not that i would've really understood what was going on had i been paying attention, mind you). i do love that we finally get to see a physical relationship between utena and anthy! that was super rewarding. i'm pretty sure i punched the air when they kissed at the end. there was no place for nanami in the narrative, but they threw in her cow persona, and that made me happy. i felt like the writers were all, "hey, i know nanami and chu-chu aren't in this story, but we haven't forgotten about them!" having touga not be an antagonist was weird? my gut instinct was NO DON'T TRUST HIM HE'S A BAD PERSON. i couldn't get over that. i generally felt quite a bit of dissonance while watching the movie since i had just come off the show. every time there was a plot change it felt like my brain was having to re-route its course. i like mark's interpretation of the story taking place in an alternate universe, so i'm just gonna go with that (otherwise, my head hurts too much). ultimately, i had a fabulously fun time watching this.

i think that's one of the the best things about the show: it's so steeped in metaphor and surrealism that any of those interpretations are viable. i don't know that i've ever watched a more complex story. it was absolutely fascinating. i can't wait to watch it again and again.
