Good response from Martin on the matter, especially emphasising that it is ultimately down to the individual player as to which country is chosen, no matter what the individual associations say to them.

While it used to be the case that a player might have a better chance of going to a tournament if they declared for the Republic, this is no longer the case. Both teams are now pretty much at the same level (whether we in the Republic like it or not) which makes Michael's original comments even more needless.

Great win for Rovers and fully deserved, our season is up and running. Bringing Dave Cawley back to the Showgrounds could turn out to be our best bit of transfer business, great game from him tonight.

It appears the people in RTE forget about previewing the Saturday games because it was same last week, there was no preview of Sligo Rovers vs Limerick which was on Saturday. Either that or they just don't like previewing games involving Limerick.

Big game required from Rovers this weekend. Although it's still early, if we were to lose 2 home games in a row, the preseason buzz around the Showgrounds will soon evaporate and things could end up very similar to last season.

Horribly sad news, couldn't believe it when I heard it first! Condolences to his family, may he rest in peace. Still remember his savage goal against Sweden in Stan's first game as manager as if it was only yesterday.

That's true about the fixtures Paul and hopefully it will not come back to bite us especially after our flirtation with relegation last year. Although we got some decent results away last season, a bad run in the away fixtures this year could be fatal to us.

Notwithstanding the above, Derry are our northwest neighbours and it was the correct thing to do. We might not have been so accommodating if it was Shams!!

Good selection and hard to argue with it. Toss of a coin between Healy and McGrath. Other than that, probably have Conway or Larmour instead of McFadden on the bench. Delighted for James Ryan.

Martin O'Neill has since come and said that these games are not games to give young players experience in even though just last week he was saying he's looking forward to the new talent coming through?! So other than the 2 away friendlies coming up, I wonder what matches he intends to try out the youngsters considering the Nations League has been primarily brought in to replace friendlies?
