North QLD Birder : Gotcha! Asian Dowitcher on Cairns Esplanade

Yup you have Mark. I didn't mention it as there a fair few of the buggers around! This roost had Bar and Black-tailed Godwits, Great Knots, Red Knots, Red-necked Stints, Curlew Sandpipers as well as those mentioned. Unfortunately people can walk around on the beach as they want, well at least this section.

Thanks Denis! Haha I am not sure about imposing. generally. I think I become imposing when someone tries to separate me from something I have been searching for in the hot tropical sun for several days!!

North QLD Birder : New Nikon Monarchs and some Esplanade Fun

Mark I wish I had some camera gear that came in more than one part. Working part time for a non profit organisation just doesnt afford such opportunities! I use a Panasonic Lumix FZ35. It's an OK camera but the autofocus drives me nuts. I actually had to manually focus those Forest Kingfisher shots. Can you imagine?? Manually focusing on a P&S?! What a bloody nightmare.

Thanks Barbara! Those whistling-ducks were particularly fond of it. It was a treat to watch!

I can't be certain but I am fairly sure it is native. I say "weed" as this is a type of duckweed (Lemnaceae) plant. Apparently it can really improve a pond/lagoons health.

Thanks mate! Much appreciated. I think everything is more exciting in the tropics! Including the viruses unfortunately, I have had a high fever for over 24 hours.

A little smaller than massive but definitely impressive for a man made wetland! I will definitely be heading back there soon...

North QLD Birder : Broken Binoculars and a Strange Week

Thanks mate, appreciated. I actually got lots more photos of the "Reef Heron" (haha) hunting, but this was my favourite. Eastern Reef Egrets are all white, at least the white morph, which could be why the name was changed to Egret. I think they still call the Western Reef Heron a heron in most countries...

Haha unfortunately hot does not mean dry hear in the tropics. We are in monsoon at the moment. That being said, it has been unusually dry. Thanks for the kind comments Daniel!

North QLD Birder : Bird Journal 1.4 - A Review

Thanks Andy, much appreciated. I didnotice the amount of updates occuring seemed to be decreasing as of May 09, based if nothing else on the blog activity. I'm glad you enjoyed the review. I actually haven't even looked at Wildlife Lister so I might check that out in the near future too. To me, Bird Journal is about the only program I have seen that is heading in the right direction. It looks modern and incorporates media well. These days, nearly everyone has some bird photos or videos they would like to include with their sightings. Thanks again for the comments mate.

North QLD Birder : Bird Journal 1.4 - Developer Response

Hey Mark, thanks for the kind comments. I think the release will be "early 2010". I am very interested to see what they do with it. At the moment its major limitation is manipulating data it collects as opposed to not collecting enough. One of the nice things about it is you can customise the data entry fields allowing you to collect whatever info you want. I think you're right though, at this stage this is very much a hobbyist program.

I plan on doing a full review of Bird Journal, Birder's Diary and maybe Avisys. Obviously from an amateur perspective, but still, there doesn't seem to be many others around.

Haha don't worry, it was a world away for me too until about a year ago! It was a surreal feeling seeing species that I have dreamed my entire life of seeing. I have fallen in love with North Queensland, I truly have.
