Daily Camera.com: : Greenlee: Doing stupid stuff? - Boulder Daily Camera

I'll also add this replication study of Gibson's 2nd study; reported without absurd opinion: http://www.dailycamera.com/columnists/ci_26433447... Dr. Piacentino said: “But while the amount of gluten is undeniably reduced in low-FODMAPs diets, it is not known to what extent the benefits of low-FODMAPs diets are due to FODMAPs per se or to gluten reduction.” And that's a question that can't be answered properly without a biological mechanism to test against. The array of gluten targeting immunoglobins that are tested for in Celiacs are limited, and the potential array of amyloids that gluten may create by reacting with other proteins likely exceeds standard testing capability - and there's no guarantee that a lack of autoimmune reaction means that the gluten-peptides aren't still irritating the gut, or causing other problems. And if you think this theory is nuts, I invite you to research the latest approved test for T1 Diabetes, shown to be 65% effective on its positive results: The Kronus ZnT8Ab Elisa Assay: http://prezi.com/9ttbennve9zx/t1d/ . It tests for the results of CD8 T-Cell activity, which is an immune cell produced to fight a gluten-amyloid, which lodges itself in the pancreas: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24016298 So if gluten-proteins are causing such a devastating autoimmune reaction in a large faction of this subset of the population (T1 Diabetes), it's not an unreasonable position to suggest that gluten-amyloids may be disrupting other metabolic functions. Of course, blaming it all on FODMAPs and ignoring the larger picture is easy, because once someone looks and sees what FODMAPs actually are, they go "Yeah, beans make me fart! That makes sense!" and they forget about the loaf of French Bread they ate with their beans & rice. It's this kind of quick science that led to the low-fat, low-cholesterol movement that's likely sickened most of the world over the past 30+ years. Isn't the internet awesome, where anonymous know-nothings can educate themselves enough to tear apart an opinion piece in minutes?

Generally, when one goes on a rage rant against a wide swath of the general public, it's best to make sure that the facts being relying on aren't out of date or incomplete. Almost as important is to understand the actual science being reported, so that one don't sound like a moron when one starts accusing people of being stupid and ignorant because what they're doing goes against ones views, vs. the actual science. To begin with, Gibson's 2nd study did not "entirely debunk" the gluten-free "craze"; it showed that people complaining of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) who blamed it on gluten were likely suffering from a reaction to FODMAPs, and not gluten. In order to avoid FODMAPs, one would generally eliminate gluten from the diet anyway, because wheat and other gluten grains contain FODMAPs. Gibson says this in the discussion section of his research: " More focused attention to anxiety and depression rather than fatigue might provide additional clues to why patients who follow a GFD feel better." You make this delicious comment: "Imagine how they felt when Dr. Gibson told them the experiment was a sham and the positive effects they reported from a fake gluten-free diet." Do you know what they told him? They said they didn't care, and were staying on their gluten-free diet. This took Dr. Gibson by surprise (but not entirely so, as he mentioned this in his 2nd study), so he conducted a 3rd study, focused on the possible mental effects of gluten, which he mentions in his 2nd study. His 3rd study, too, was a double-blind cross-over study, and the results indicated that gluten was causing a depressive effect on people. So, literally, going gluten-free IS making people feel better, whether their IBS is better or not. Assuming of course, Gibson's word is still that of SCIENCE after you read his 3rd study. Usually when I point out Gibson's 3rd study, he's suddenly not trustworthy, except for his 2nd study: depression and anxiety just isn't that important, I suppose. So, a bunch of people (those damned ignorant gluten-free nuts) who are feeling, possible for the first time in their lives... happy, because they're no longer eating an ingredient that -makes- them anxious and depressed - well, they're just f'ing crazy people because science says so. Or it did last week, anyway. There's plenty more science about the other ill effects of gluten on a much wider segment of the population than celiacs, as well, but because it's highly technical and hasn't been reported in such a dramatic fashion, I certainly wouldn't expect Greenlee to care or understand it - not when he's just rehashing the same article that at least 20 people have written before him: http://goo.gl/Tf2X29 If he's truly interested, however, he should look at the latest research on how gluten proteins can interrupt the insulin/amylin metabolic function, and create amyloids (misfolded fibrous proteins), which can collect as plaques on organs/tissues and induce an autoimmune reaction in some (T1 diabetes), or just chronic illness in others (T2 Diabetes, atherosclerosis, Parkinson's, etc.) Gibson himself briefly hinted at this possibility for non-celiac IBS in his 2nd study: "Alternatively, gluten might induce symptoms only in the presence of a moderate content of FODMAPs." He didn't test this condition in his 2nd study. So if gluten+FODMAP = worse bathroom news, which may be entirely possible if gluten catalyzes amyloids (known to be present in celiac sprue, not tested for in either of his studies.) If the hints being dropped in other current gluten research hold out (because one unreplicated study really isn't the-end-all of science - it's just an exploratory start), then we can talk about population percentages who should really be concerned.

Breitbart.com : US consumer inflation up two percent

In other words, the real inflation number is 18.7%, and they're hiding it as best they can by mixing in other things that don't affect the majority of people's day to day lives. It's not like our masters have any clue what a 20% increase in monthly bills means.

Big Hollywood : Hollywood vs. America

I would love to see Edward Cline and other writers here on Big Hollywood spend some time reviewing movies and directors that are actually of a conservative bend, instead of whining and pining over the never-ending liberal, anti-american Hollywood. James Cameron is the new Michael Moore is the new Capra is the new blah blah socialist blah. The fight doesn't have to be perpetual... there are alternatives - films and directors of them - begging to be reviewed and be given an opportunity in mainstream America. How about you give Off-Hollywood independent film makers like Jason Apuzzo (Kalifornistan), or Ladd Ehlinger Jr (Flatland: The Film, Hive Mind) an opportunity to reach a larger audience by actually reviewing their films, for better or worse. If anything, opportunity is one of the core American ideals we should all be strive for. You (Breitbart, et al) are the mainstream media now - and the opportunity (exposure) for artists such as these two is pretty much solely at your discretion. Do your job.
