KOMO - Seattle, WA : Northern Lights make it all the way south to Oregon | Weather Blog | Seattle News, Weather, Sports,

We try but it's rare to get them this far south and sometimes they sneak up on us. The Seattle/Western Washington area was a lost cause due to clouds so it didn't warrant much attention, but good point and I"ll see if we can make it better known when the solar storms are coming :)

KOMO - Seattle, WA : NOAA gives 50-50 shot of El Nino conditions this winter | Weather Blog | Seattle News, Weather, Spor

Heh, I see there is a lot of confusion over the 50/50 thing in the headline but commenter "Ryanthecubsfan" has it correct. It's weighing more toward El Nino now. I went back and tweaked said headline and added back in a line into the blog to clarify. It's a bit more complex than just stating "we don't know so it's 50-50" :)

We have another person around here who similarly tracks the weather based on the moon "holding its water" -- we put a blurb about it when Steve Pool and I wrote our weather book 7 years ago -- interesting theory! :)

KOMO - Seattle, WA : What old treasures are hidden in the KOMO Weather Center? | Weather Blog | Seattle News, Weather, Sp

Until the last few years, the weather computers did not run on Windows, so I have no idea why the NT disks were there. the drawer was a mish mosh and I don't know why some stuff was even there -- probably because it was outdated at the time and got tossed in there. We ran on SGI's for a long time :) As for upgrades, I was in a unique position in that I had also worked for the weather software company for a few years in the late 90s and had a lot of experience on the SGI platform, so I was best suited to run the upgrades. We've since moved on to Windows and PC platforms and now IT does the upgrades :)

Heh, chalk it up to us being a bit disorganized although I was the gatekeeper of the weather software discs for a while since I was in charge of the upgrades. :)

Yes -- prevailing theme here :) I know it snows somewhere and everyone thinks it'll snow everywhere but not the case here :) But tough for us to still get the warning out for the places where we DO think it will snow while NOT freaking out the rest of the area :)

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Florida waterfront condos literally create their own weather | Weather Blog | Seattle News, Weather,

The condos are certainly enhancing the fog. Look at the condos in the distance -- note how it's foggy at the top, but not the bottom. The "engine" is just starting there. Also read JR's account of how they form. The physics is solid. It's the same effect, more or less, that cause our cap clouds on Mt. Rainier. There may be some regular fog in other spots where the air has cooled just enough on its own, but the condos are enhancing it where they stand.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Web camera captures lightning strike over Whidbey Island | Weather Blog | Seattle News, Weather, Spo

Yes, camera is pointing roughly north from Hansville across Skunk Bay. That island just to the right of the bolt is Whidbey Island. There was an earlier video I posted on Twitter from Greg during the ice storm (so, about 12,000 tweets ago :) ) that showed the nighttime lights of Anacortes behind the island there.
