GazetteOnline.com : Iowa-ISU series has future road blocks

Officials at both schools determined the bad blood between the fan bases (imagine that) was too much and they decided to take a break. By the late 1960s, ISU really wanted to play Iowa and several legislators were publicly advocating for it. Then AD Evashevski signed a two-year deal to play ISU twice in 1977 and 1978 in Iowa City, but arbitration ruled the series was for four years. Then it became annual.

I was just saying that myself. Iowa basketball needs to honor Murray Wier, Don Nelson and Tom Davis at some point.

Conference plans a 9-game schedule in 2015. They haven't decided if there will be a second protected game. My guess is, unfortunately for this rivarly, is it won't happen.

It probably will be. The Big Ten's policy covered outdoor stadiums, not domes. That's why the Iowa-Minnesota game in 2008 was held at night.

I spoke with Big Ten officials a few months ago who have said they have no plans to revisit their TV deals concerning November night games. I'm sure the 2006 Ohio State-Michigan clash would have been perfect for prime time, as would have last year's Iowa-OSU game.

GazetteOnline.com : Revenue sharing costs Iowa football

It's equal to getting $22 to put in your right pocket and taking out $1 to put in your left. The money goes to the athletics department. Of Iowa's $80 million generated in fiscal year 2008, at least 50 percent is directly attributed to football, either in ticket sales, TV revenue, etc. Most of rest consists of giving levels (which indirectly is from football first), men's basketball ticket sales/television revenue. It's fair to say football directly or indirectly generates at least 80 percent of athletics department revenue.

GazetteOnline.com : Iowa AD: Series with Iowa State could face road blocks with expanded Big Ten schedule

Iowa's athletics department is self-supporting. It doesn't use any institutional income to balance its books, unlike Iowa State (about $1.6 million) and Northern Iowa ($4.55 million). Iowa could raise ticket prices to compensate for the lack of revenue, however.

I hope Big Ten officials don't do that. Michigan-Ohio State should play once a season, not twice. I'd like to see them in the same division, play the final Saturday in November. Chances are, 8 of 10 times the winner would play in the Big Ten title game.

The problem is, the Big Ten will protect Minnesota-Wisconsin at all costs, just behind Michigan-Ohio State and just ahead of Purdue-Indiana. Minnesota-Wisky is the longest-standing rivalry in D-I, and I think Minny-Iowa gets protected, too, because of the pig. Wisconsin-Iowa is the better game but with the weakest (albeit the newest) trophy.
