I have been all over the place in terms of my opinion of Johnson. I voted for Hunt but was delighted he led us to a stonking win in December and felt he handled the start of the CV crisis reasonably well but he has been very poor frankly since returning from his illness. If he is still poorly, any personal sympathies are more than outweighed by the need for someone to get a grip, lead from the front and start taking direct responsibility for the reopening of schools, getting the economy fired up etc.

Also, with our majority, we should be the strongest Government we have since before the 2005 GE and yet we seem to be cowering in the face of a mob who have little or no respect for this country.

Not really.

For your brilliant scheme to work you would need to test positive for CV, so that your mates would be contacted and could skive off for two weeks.

If you're prepared to catch CV just to do that I worry for your sanity.

So you're saying that "most of the population" are so weak that they won't be able to act responsibly just because of what Mr Cummings has done? Sounds a bit pathetic to me and something a 5 year old would say when doing something wrong, "but that boy over there did it".

Why should we be applauding MPs who seem to be advocating that an individual should be sacked without any definitive proof that they have done anything wrong? Do you apply this same logic to any other employee who is accused of something?

It might not be overly popular in here but I think Starmer has made a pretty sure footed start and not made any major mistakes so far. Yes, there has been very little in terms of what policies he will pursue but, frankly, he’d be crazy at a time like this to make big bold pledges, he’s plenty of time for that.

I think his strategy will be to sit back and let the momentum crowd destroy themselves by splintering into small factions and then he’ll try and have a big “clause 4” type moment where he cuts the left loose completely, once they’ve been weakened enough for him to get away with it.

His problem may be a lack of charisma, popular appeal and the ability to cut through in the red wall seats that Labour will be looking to retake.

On balance though I’m expecting him to be a formidable opponent to us.

Regardless of the back and forth over how the numbers have been arrived at, this is a considerable achievement in my view and well done Matt Hancock and his team. Up until now I think he’s been outstanding and has gone up in my estimation enormously.

Agree with pretty much all of that.

The idea that the Nightingales were built just to get us through Phase 1 never stacked up in my opinion.

Because of the nature of our media the Government will never be able to say it but they should say that any relaxation of the current measures will inevitably mean more deaths than if we just stay in lockdown until, if and when, we find a vaccine. Ideally they should get on the front foot and explain why, this very tough choice, is ultimately necessary for the economic and long term health benefits for this country.

I also agree re Matt Hancock. I think overall he’s performed extremely well and I hope he’s not made the fall guy for some of the more embedded long term problems in our health system.
