How many women and men have met someone, "fell in love" with them, but there were some....characteristics that may not have been conducive to a happy marriage? And married them anyway? There really are certain characteristics to look for in a good spouse (most of which are character-related), but a lot of people ignore that just because "They make me so happy!"

But what would make a person so unhappy that they would want to "destroy themselves"? We've all had our bad days, but most of us probably wouldn't want to go as far as "destroying" ourselves. "I'm happy without most of those things, but if I had them I wouldn't mind at all. :-)" :-D Of course. But you're probably happy because you have something more substantial in your life that Ms. Houston (and apparently a lot of other celebrities) didn't. What that is, I'll have to let you figure out yourself. ^_^

"makes you wonder about the people surrounding these quick to fame stars, they don't really care for them." That's a very good point. Addiction, at it's root, seems to be an extreme way for someone to deal with negative emotions. If it is true that these people are surrounded by those who do not truly care for them, perhaps they sense that, and turn to alcohol, drugs, and other harmful behaviors as a way to cope, or maybe, to provoke someone around them to reach out and say, "I love you, I care about you, please stop." I'm not trying to remove the element of self control and personal responsibility. No one forced the drugs into her system. But you have to wonder what would drive someone to want to "destroy" themselves.

After all, you're not going to be 23 forever, so you might as well put all of that youthful energy into acting dignified and respectable. How you practice is how you play the game. It will wear better when you're 53, and serve you pretty well when you're twenty-three.

Madonna and other ladies of a certain age are disrespected and mocked, but is it necessarily because of their age, or what they are doing at their age? We think of Madonna more in terms of what she stands for and what her music represents, not necessarily her age. So, let me pose this question: if Madonna was a bit more refined in her dress and mannerisms, would people be less likely to go on about what an old crone she is?

I agree, a big chunk of the vocal fans are rather leftist. But the strange thing is, the fact that they seized Harry Potter as some sort of theme for their leftist causes seems a bit....forced. I've been on discussion forums, articles on Mugglenet, etc. and the way they talk about the series is weird. They seem wholly convinced that JK Rowling meant to write some great, liberal, social justice novel, because they will complain about how she didn't do this in regards to a group of characters, or she didn't go far enough with this theme, yada yada yada. It's almost like they've never considered the possibility that the series might be more conservative than liberal. *shock* The mental disconnect is astounding.
