Crasstalk : Tuesday Evening Open Thread

Thank you for your kind words, Duo. But it's not the same thing. What I wrote was "I have compassion for those discriminated against and also for those who are discriminating against others out of fear or lack of empirical understanding." I was speaking of young people who have ageist ideas. If they live long enough, all young people will have the empirical understanding of being older (and eventually, old). No white person will ever have the empirical understanding of what it's like to be Mexican. Please, let's put this issue to rest. I'm biracial (white/black) with a much older Mexican boyfriend, so your seeming effort to align my comments with racist ideals is really distasteful to me.

Crasstalk : The True Story of the Phantom Pooper

What a great story (and win-win ending). I am especially impressed by this line: "I had to make sure the problem was solved soon because we were about to move and I didn’t want to leave this for the landlord." That's the essence of graciousness!

I can't reply on the other thread anymore, but: I think you are right to be vocal about this. However, I also understand the perspective of a younger person who is freaked out by aging and wants to distance themselves from it. I have compassion for those discriminated against and also for those who are discriminating against others out of fear or lack of empirical understanding.

Would you consider a format where the most recent comment thread stays at the top of the page, with comments underneath are in reverse chronological order?

In my estimation, this format (where the thread that's most recently commented on is always bumped to the top of the page) lends itself to controversy, because that's what often inspires people to comment. I think a better setup is the one that Crosstalk had: the most recent comment thread - the entire thread - is at the top of the page until the next comment thread comes along. Then you can scroll down and read other comment threads, and they all stay in the same place they were originally. This constant leapfrogging of comments does not inspire conversations of any length or depth.
