Here's a fun fact: I'm taking Criminal Adjudicatory Procedure right now, and our text book mentions a study on police who testify before court. The study was based only on the perceptions of judges based on the evidence they've seen in their court room, but basically judges, on average, estimate that cops lie on the witness stand more than 50% of the time. So, the police are basically the least-truthful people in America...

According to the Guardian at least 9 counties, including Mobile, *have refused* to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples so far today. Many shut down their offices, and at least one nice judge iinsisted that, nah, actually she's never been *required* to issue marriage licenses at all, period. Clearly, its time to deploy the National Guard in these counties. Preferably the openly gay troops =P

As someone in San Francisco who's shopped at Borderlands, this is pretty sad. But I was even more pissed to see him blaming the closure on the minimum-wage increase. Most small businesses closing in San Francisco are closing because of the lack of commercial rent control in California, and not because of our higher minimum wage. It's not an issue of having to pay employees - it's an issue of having to pay landlords. And as this article mentions, living anywhere *near* San Francisco on a minimum wage salary is impossible, unless you're in rent-controlled or public housing. And I do think that independent bookstores have a future. Modern Times in the Mission is still going strong, even though they occasionally have to do fundraising campaigns to raise money...I know that I still buy all of my books in paperback ;).
