Personally, I think you're giving "the vast majority of our political leadership" way too much credit.

OP FOR : Who shall guard our Guardians?

Uh, sorry John, but no. 1. The "brass" know that recruiting centers are targets, given that several have already been attacked. 2. The "brass" refuse to provide any defense for these targets, either by arming the recruiters or by stationing security (military or civilian) on site. 3. The "brass" object when Americans take it on themselves to provide security for the recruiters. In fact, they explicitly identify these Americans as threats to the recruiters, despite absolutely no evidence to support this conclusion. One has to wonder just whose side the "brass" is on. But what do I know? I am just a prior-service enlisted swine (USAF/ANG E-6) and former civilian security officer (8 years).

OP FOR : Firearms Friday: Ammunition Trends

Friends from around the country (I love blogs!) confirm that .22 is still scarce, and expen$ive when it can be found. On the scattergun front, I checked my local Academy a couple of weeks ago. Shotgun ammo was thin generally, with only 1 (one!) 100-round box of 20g target ammo on the shelf, and only a very few 25-round boxes. Likewise little hunting ammo, and practically no specialty (#3 Buck, slug, flechette) ammo. I, too, can neither confirm nor deny reports that scattergun shooters are/have been stockpiling ammunition.

OP FOR : The Amazing B-17 Flying Fortress

The B-17 Flying Fortress was one hell of an airplane. If you get the chance, dig up a copy of Martin Caidin's "Flying Forts" or "Black Thursday". Another good one is "Everything But The Flak", about restoring three B-17s for use in filming the Steve McQueen movie "The War Lover". Also check out Jay Zeamer's Medal of Honor mission in the south Pacific. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jay_Zeamer,_Jr.#Meda... (also described in the "Dogfights" episode 'Long Odds', season 1, episode 10)

OP FOR : Sidewheel Aircraft Carriers

Lots of photos there I've not seen before, and U. S. carrier history has been a hobby of mine for years*. Sable and Wolverine were also the only coal-fired carriers in the U.S. Navy. Even our first carrier, CV-1 USS Langley (commissioned 1921), was oil-fired. In fact, in her previous incarnation as AC-3 USS Jupiter, she was the first turbo-electric ship in the U.S. Navy. * Hopelessly out of date website: http://home.grandecom.net/~cvproj/carrier.htm

I invite the Colonel to haul an SB-3614 Tactical Telephone Switchboard out of a truck and set it up. Then she can help lay out the 70-100lb reels of 36-pair cable. After that, she can help erect a GRA-4 antenna. Only after all that is done can she help set up the sleeping tents...
