Just came from a parent-teacher conference with my child's 3rd grade teacher. She has 5 out of 17 kids in her class (almost 1/3) who are barely reading at a 1st grade level (in the 3rd grade!!! - and her class is not unusual-every 3rd grade teacher at the school has a large % of kids in their classes who are way behind in reading and math) Of these kids, only 1 parent has contacted the teacher to inquire about ways to help her child catch up - how very sad, for these kids and for our society. I have watched people in my city buy shopping carts full of (expensive) food with food stamps and then load their bags into brand new Cadillac Escalades, Hummers, etc. (not kidding) I know several families (4 people in the family, usually one adult and several elementary aged school children) who receive almost $600 a month in food stamps. Really??? I spend $250 a month to feed my family of 4 (2 adults and two kids)...and these kids also get free breakfast and lunch at school during the school year and free lunches during the summer. There is a huge amount of waste, abuse, and fraud in the food stamp program!!!
