Nothing else comes close. But I agree there were a couple boring episodes. Interestingly, the most boring were written by none other than David Chase, who later scripted "Sopranos." In his "Rockford" scripts, the Italian bad guys are like cardboard cutouts rejected by Central Casting. And that's how writing goes: It's an apprenticeship. You learn by doing, and nobody bats .1000 (though Steven J Cannell came close). But "Rockford" is a timeless classic, and most of that comes down to Garner inhabiting that role like his own skin. Funny, poignant, pathetic, heroic. My question is, Given today's situations/examples (OW, etc), would Garner REALLY describe himself as a "die-hard" liberal? I have my doubts. He was probably more along the lines of Lieberman-liberal.
