The Mother's Handbook.net : Cleanliness, Godliness, and Allergies

Oh, wait, I remember, if the comment is too long, it just ignores it. I just realized it because the above comment was incomplete. Here's the tail end. As for allergies, I have to tell you that removal of carpet from my house and installation of good filters on my ancient AC system has done wonders for those of us (all adults or teens) sensitive to them. Just sayin'. MUST stop being so long-winded.

According to the NYT this morning, there are flu cases in camps all over the country (but particularly Maine). Often dozens.

The Mother's Handbook.net : Just Say No

I don't volunteer. It doesn't hurt that I'm painfully antisocial and don't join pretty much any organizations, but I have no trouble saying no. I have a job. I have a family. I have twenty hobbies that are all time consuming. I require a modicum of time where I'm doing none of that. Volunteering just isn't a reasonable option. I hope flit reads this.

The Mother's Handbook.net : Hippocrates and the Hodos

I remember my first husband's reaction when I told him I'd started my period that morning. He was, "Oh, ok. So, wanna have sex?" "You don't mind?" I asked. "What, you're STILL on it?" Apparently he envisioned me standing over a bucket and just releasing. I don't think Greeks were prudes; if I remember correctly, they applied the repression pretty much solely to women. Some things really don't change.

The Mother's Handbook.net : Passive Aggressive Snots

I had a friend who couldn't take the clutter of husband and kids but wouldn't bow down. So, started throwing anything she found on the floor away. Expensive, but it got a quick response. I've threatened my daughter with buying fluorescent fabric paint and writing DORK on everything she leaves lying around.

3) delaying whatever it was that he needed to do by the amount of time it takes you to get off your arse and find whatever it is. You forgot the time wasted yelling at them for wasting your time. They have to LOVE that.

The Mother's Handbook.net : Road Trip!

I can read in the car easily, but my husband readily gets carsick. Since he has dyslexia, he also is not particularly fond of reading. However, he doesn't like to drive at all which leaves me stuck driving and not reading. Oh well.

Why does this remind me of a conversation with my husband when we first got married and I wanted a DVD player for the back seat. "The kids are difficult - why should we reward them?" "Ha!" I told him, "The DVD player is for me, for my sanity." One trip was all it took to convince him. That's why we do food, too. We're pretty tolerant of dirt and crumbs, thanks to Alex, and few if anythings that don't wash. They don't have to listen to my music - but they better have headphones.

I'm a huge advocate for snacks and DVD players. My kids are still young enough to settle for movies and my teenager LOVES to read so books will work OR DVDs. What I need is something to entertain my husband....

The Mother's Handbook.net : Consider the Source

AHA! There's a length limit! That's why my long comments won't post. Here's the rest. My daughter came to me the other day and said "I hate socialism." I said, "Oh, what exactly is socialism?" She not only couldn't answer, she had no idea. She thought communism, socialism and fascism were all the same thing. Um, no. I told her she was entitled to think whatever she wanted, but she had to know her facts, she had to understand the issues, before she got to spout them to me. I didn't mention much about the obvious and repeated distortions of facts you were talking about in the name of sensationalism. I just ate and I'm trying to keep it down.

The Mother's Handbook.net : Consider the Source

Damn, you might have developed this based on the interchange I was having on my last RS blogpost. I am so with you. No one should parrot anything they read anywhere without understanding the implications and giving it the smell test. You want to think differently - prepare to defend it with data. (I never took debate, but I've never been short on spine and I generally don't say anything unless I have DATA to back me up). Know your stuff, not catch-phrases. Don't confuse popularity and dissemination in the news with legitimacy. Remeber even great people can be mistaken. Question everything. If something doesn't smell right, follow up and learn the facts. If you can't get them readily, at the very least to pass the nonsense on.

The Mother's Handbook.net : Anyone have Scruples?

Oh my GOD, I now SO want this game! Not that I'd be in a different position than you. I'm famous for my "maladjustive" rigid morality (I had to look it up) over myself. But just playing with my husband and daughter would be hilarious - even if I never learned anything. They're both accomplished liars but I have an uncanny lie-detector.
