Travelers Notebook : The Evil Undead: How to Protect Yourself From Vampires Around the World

Hi EvilGod. I'm a bit confused by your post. Are you claiming Bram Stroker effectively created the vampire myth or just Dracula? There's a lengthy history of vampire fiction and lore throughout recorded human history, but maybe not within the Eastern European traditions, arising around the 18th c., with which Western culture is largely familiar. You can even research the etymology of the word "vampire."

Once you know how cheaply you can buy prescriptions in certain countries, it highlights the utter greed of US health insurance companies. There's no defensible reason why a medicine costs $200 here and $5-15 in Mexico.

Brave New Traveler : 5 Ways Inner Travel Helps You See Other Cultures

It's interesting, the assumptions we make about the emotional conditions of the poor. I'm not sure we can make broad generalizations one way or the other. My dad, who grew up in the slums of LA during the 40s and 50s, visited an elderly woman from the old neighborhood a few years back. Her recollections of those times were radically different than his own, claiming that those years were the happiest of her life. Everyone was poor, but they were poor together. Granted, I think our sense of community has changed over the decades. At any rate, he remembers it being a rather difficult, painful period, especially as he become more aware of the discrepancy of wealth in the city. That being said, making the claim that being poor necessarily means one doesn't desire opportunity for self-improvement is odd. That right should be granted to everyone, regardless of financial means.

Matador Pulse : Where's the Love? A Blogger at the Prop 8 Protests

Me, too. The public's attitude towards sexual orientation has evolved so much, even in the last 10 years--thanks to popular media and activism. The reasons of opposing gay civil rights are seeming more and more bigotted and irrational as the years go by. Like Sen. Mark Leno said at the rally, since the last CA vote to ban gay marriage we have gained 18 points in the polls. Victory won't be immediate, but it will happen.

I agree, Gregory. That's why having the president of the San Francisco NAACP and one of the only six students to be mentored by Dr. Martin King, Jr.speak out against Prop 8 was such a momentous moment at the rally. A lot of feelings were hurt by what some see as a betrayal, but I think people are working together to bridge the gap.
