Well, it was kinda fun, porchhound. I'm done for tonight and this thread will be stale tomorrow. Remember Waco: Imagine if Janet Reno had been Attorney General after torture had been legitimized. If you're comfortable with that, more power to you.

No, we had 9/11 because the FBI ignored the agents in Minneapolis who were frantically reporting Saudi men taking 747 flying lessons with no intentions of getting airline jobs or learning how to land.

Yes, Clinton and Bush Sr. gutted the CIA in the early 90's as part of the "peace dividend" from the fall of the Soviet Union.

My BS speculation is no more unfounded than yours.

Looks like my reply is stuck in moderator hell. The links are fixed, take a look again.

Do something, even if it won't work and will waste time that could be spent doing something that will? Maybe I should sacrifice a goat and do a "save my family" dance for the gods? Maybe I should go get a palm reading?

Do something, even if it's immoral? I thought you disagreed with how Janet Reno handled the Branch Davidians? Certainly, you and I both agree that she should have handled that differently. Should I torture several innocents until I find the guilty person who can tell me what I need to know? Do the ends justify all means, no matter what? Do I want my wife to live with the innocent blood that I spilled in the process of saving her?

Thank you very much for letting me know. I didn't realize that the posting pane here mangled URLs.

The edit feature didn't mangle them when I fixed them, so they work now. I have checked each of them.

The Bush/Cheney administration will be remembered as the administration that did everything they could to further they political goals at the expense of the integrity of the American intelligence community. They turned the CIA from an independent bureaucracy that could tell the President bad news when he needed to hear it into a political ass-covering/kissing machine. The Bush/Cheney administration has done more to jeopardize this country's ability to detect and respond to a new terrorist threat than a slew of bleeding-heart liberal administrations could possibly do. Their policy on torture is completely irrelevant to that, however.

A fake what? Bogus how? Does this mean that you tried to read the first article, or just got to the title?

Is that a serious question?

1. Do you mean Mossad? I've got no idea how much they rely on torture, but if it doesn't work, I'd bet they don't use it. Supposedly, they taught the Shah of Iran's secret police how to torture. How'd that work out for him?
2. So, I see that you didn't even read the first paragraph of the first article. Okay.

Dick Cheney: "If we're going to have this debate, it ought to be a complete debate."

In the complete debate, the experts disagree with his assessment. See:
- Torture? It probably killed more Americans than 9/11
- Torture Ineffective, Agency Warned In '02
- My Tortured Decision
- Water-Bored
- The Drawbacks of Fighting Terrorism with Torture
- Torture and Terrorism

Over and over again, professional interrogators, when they are free to speak freely, say that torture doesn't work where conventional interrogation fails and that torture produces enormous quantities of false leads, wasting man-years of effort on follow up investigations that reliably prove to be wild goose chases.

Given every opportunity to provide the truth about the supposed torture success stories, Cheney's presented facts have failed to stand up to scrutiny.
