KOMO - Seattle, WA : Shoreline students to give up texting, Twitter, Facebook | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, Breaking N

I must be in the minority here, but I happen to LIKE being connected. I spend a fair amount of time online and have met many, many wonderful friends from all over the world. That couldn't happen without the technology we have today. I carry a smartphone, have a Facebook account, participate in several forums, text, have several avatars in SecondLife, and shop online. It's an integral part of my life and even at my young age of 63, I embrace the wondrous technology we have today. I don't feel addicted to it any more than I feel addicted to a radio or my car or a dishwasher. It's just the next phase of life as we know it. Granted, online activities can take a good chunk of one's life. It can get in the way of 'real life' development. But, IMHO, that doesn't mean we should discourage the use of today's technology. My take is that we are in smack-dab in the middle of growing pains of Socializing 2.0. Good on these kids for realizing that they need to learn some moderation... we can all benefit from that. But let's not throw the baby out with the bath water. Technology is not evil.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : King County Council rejects sales tax ballot measure | KOMO News - Seattle, Washington | News

No argument Karen, but it does pose a question in my mind. In business, folks will travel to other businesses or states to chase the better salaries. If a business doesn't remain salary competitive, it loses out on the cream-of-the-crop managers. We certainly need better county management, but so does every other government agency in America. It's a very competitive world out there and the county must compete with the business sector for qualified employees. With that in mind, I really question whether we can consider $100k+ as a bloated salary. I'm just not convinced it's as simple as cutting salaries. With that said, I agree with you about eliminating some of the positions and trimming administratively. But that raises the question, what do we cut? Seems like the same question that King County admin is faced with. It's a vicious cycle...

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Newspapers get tax break during bad times | KOMO News - Seattle, Washington | Local

"The Washington tax cut, which will cost the state about $1.3 million a year, was approved despite uneasiness in the industry about newspapers relying on the government they cover for help." This just has stinky written all over it. While in the grand scheme of things it's really not a huge amount of money, why are we cutting taxes NOW? And why newspapers? Seems like too little, too late. And perceptions always overrule any logic involved... is Gregoire hopping into bed with the media? (Ewwww!) I'm hoping the newspapers already have action plans to become 'newsmedia'... look at us... we're reading the news online. I haven't picked up a printed newspaper for a very long time. It's an antique industry. Time to move on.

Great idea genius! Let me see... I'll arrange this in advance: I'll be at the Arrival gate 20-30 minutes after your plane lands to make sure you have time to deplane. Then I'll circle around the airport for 30-45 minutes and cause traffic congestion because your plane is late. Awww, No cell phone?
KOMO - Seattle, WA : Mother Nature shows off area's weather complexities | KOMO News - Seattle, Washington | News

In the meteorologists' defense, it's my understanding that Pacific Northwest weather is among the toughest in the world to predict and forecast. We have a ton of variables here; the Olympics, the Cascades, the ocean, the sound, the ever-changing jet stream. It's pretty unique here. Just look at the variation we see in this storm... it's like neighborhood-by-neighborhood predicting. Also, east of here, there is an abundance of data from the western states for the predictors to scour. A child can predict just by looking west in the great plains! We have the Pacific Ocean to the west; with pretty slim pickings of data for the meteorologists to pick over and predict with. I respect Scott's willingness to crawl out on a limb with his predictions. He has an uncanny understanding of the complexities of Pacific Northwest weather... and he's real about it.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Online Washington schools may have to repay state | KOMO News - Seattle, Washington | Local

Why is it that education always takes it in the shorts here in Washington? Seems like every time we turn around, the state does everything it can to make education a non-priority and difficult to carry out. There are a couple things about this story that confuse me. First, why does it cost so much for these online programs? If you do the math, that's nearly $100,000 per program. I've developed college level online programs... it's difficult, but come on. It sounds like someone is soaking the school system with overpriced courseware. I may be wrong, but it seems way too spendy to me. Second, It looks like the schools were making great use of the online programs. Why are the powers-that-be spoiling it for them because of a paperwork problem? If education were truly a priority here, we wouldn't be hearing about this kind of thing. Frustrating.

I'll 'fess up... I didn't pay much attention to the whole Good to Go campaign when it was first started. Quite frankly, now I'm lost! I got a fist shaken at me when I jumped into the carpool lane in the 'wrong' place. I'm not sure how to get a sticker and when I should use it. I see the prices on the signs... who decides that? (BTW, I know I can figure it out, just making an example) For me, from my perspective, the whole thing is confusing so I don't use it. Now I see that the monetary return is a joke. Looks to me like someone was trying to justify their political existence with a big-bucks flashy plan. Go back to the HOV lane or get rid of it completely and spend some money on mass transit and alternative fuel.

I've not seen this film yet, but am anxious to view it. I find it offensive that someone is trying to "protect" me from this group's viewpoint. I can make informed decisions all by myself, thank you. There is no question in my mind that radical Islam is a threat to each of us. Much of the liberal press I see seems to ignore the threat and instead tries to soothe me that the radicals are few and real Muslims are good peace-loving people. That may be true, but unfortunately, those "few" radicals are very powerful and I, for one, want to what we're up against. Why protect them? Distribute the DVD! We're actually intelligent enough to sort it out.

Ahhhmm... ok... let's set up a video camera and watch you at your workplace. Teacher28 said it... This is not 1984. I really don't think that's a solution at all. Maybe a handful of parents would use something like that in a positive way, but IMHO a system like that could encourage folks to go witch hunting. I'm sure most people don't have a clue as to what a teacher faces every day. Spend a few days in the trenches and I think you'd be surprised... most walk out thinking 'no way I'd ever do that for a job... you couldn't pay me enough'. We need to support the teachers and the students!
