KOMO - Seattle, WA : Parents: Seattle plan would \'dumb down\' math education | KOMO News - Seattle, Washington | Local

As a Seattle resident and parent of two children in public school, I am surprised to hear some parents say that they would like the Seattle Public Schools to teach math to today’s students in the same manner that we were taught math over 20 years ago. I don’t want my kids to see math as just a page full of numbers and symbols to which they must apply rules without ever seeing concrete examples of math in their world. I want them to be exposed to a math curriculum that places their lessons in a context to which they can relate. I want them to be given opportunities to connect math to what they already know, to actively engage in hands-on experiences, and to see a variety of approaches. I want them to be encouraged to engage in reasoning as they read, articulate ideas, and ask questions. The Discovering Math materials that have been recommended for adoption do all of this, according to the Seattle educators who have taken the time to evaluate the curriculum and use it in the classroom. For other concerned parents I recommend a book by Jo Boaler titled, “What's Math Got to Do with It?: How Parents and Teachers Can Help Children Learn to Love Their Least Favorite Subject”
