You could make the argument that this episode does adjust the relationship between Spike and Rarity somewhat, and if the show sticks with that then I'll be quite happy. My bet, however, is that the very next time we see Spike they'll be mining the romantic crush angle as though this episode never happened. I was hoping we'd see a more confident Spike getting more respect after Power Ponies, but between Rarity Takes Manehattan and It Ain't Easy Being Breezies it was as though the lesson and development in Power Ponies never happened at all.

I found the Spike sections to be pretty boring honestly. He's not painfully incompetent like in Spike At Your Service, but I don't feel they did anything interesting with the character here either.

This is my issue with Spike episodes in general - the writers never seem that invested in doing anything with the character or developing him in any way. He's lazy, greedy, fluctuates between being competent or incompetent depending on the needs of the given episode, and has a doomed crush on Rarity. This is as true now as it was back in S1. That's what's bad about it. I would actually like to be pleasantly surprised and have a Spike episode that does something to change this status quo for him, but this episode wasn't it.

I think what kills it for me is how low stakes everything gets treated as in this episode. It wants the situation with Rarity to be such a large crisis that we can see Spike struggle to overcome his desire to not alienate her. However, you never feel the slightest hint that there's any real danger, and the town itself doesn't really seem to be sounding much of an alarm over what I'd have to assume would appear to be a similar situation as when Discord or the Black Tentacles invaded during the S2 and S4 premieres.

For me that makes the situation come across as completely contrived. I also highly dislike having Rarity's agency removed for almost the entire episode. Lesson Zero and Party of One work because they explore the darker sides of characters we know and love. It's interesting to see how a character responds when pushed to their limits. It's not interesting to see a character magicked into responding a certain way.

The cursed book itself boggles my mind. Its purpose for existing seems to be to either teach a single individual a minor friendship lesson OR destroy the world. It's one of the most contrived bits of Deus Ex Machina I've seen in the entire run of the show, and it's the foundation for the entire episode.

Kinda late in the day for an April Fool's joke, but I guess it still is technically April 1st.

The lesson this teaches kids is one of victim-blaming. When bad things happen to people, assume they must have brought it upon themselves. It's a horrible, broken mentality that I see many adults buy into because it makes it easy to put blinders up against injustices everywhere, and now we're teaching this same bullshit to the next generation.

Power Requirements only check to see that you have the required amount of Power between all of your characters on the table, regardless of where they are at. They do not have to be at the same location as where you're playing a new card in order to meet the requirement.

I could have Rainbow Dash (1 Power and Blue) at Home and Sweetie Sunrise (1 Power and Blue) at my problem, and then could play Wild Fire (Cost 2 action tokens and has a Power Requirement of 2 Blue) at my opponent's Problem. That's because the Power Requirement just looks at how much Power I have total from all my Blue characters in play.
