In respect to the government getting involved, I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree. Our current Executive Branch and a large portion of the Legislative Branch are attempting to replace the Bill of Rights with Orwell’s “Big Brother”. I think “less is more” until we manage to get the nation back on track.

As an aside: adults have the right to refuse treatment and so end their life with dignity. Children do not.
On the point of care for children, are you saying that there are no infants that grow to maturity in state instructions and foster care? If that is the case, then I am woefully misinformed. I had always thought of this as a poorly kept secret. On the point of “older children”, I wholeheartedly agree. I also think (perhaps erroneously) that Social Services tends to discount the children’s wishes in this area. “But are you suggesting that killing them by torturing them is a better option for them?” I’m not sure where this statement came from, but no, I do not suggest that. If you are referring to the (now discontinued) practice in Illinois of sticking an unwanted newborn in a “closet” to die: absolutely not.

I have never heard of documentation that anyone remembers pain they felt as a fetus. But assuming that may be the case, I have two answers for that:
1) Concerning the rape scenario, any abortion would most probably be considered and performed in the first trimester before there is any even rudimentary cognitive ability.
2) Considering the short life in extreme pain scenario, I’ll concede that a fetus may experience pain from some point in the second trimester through delivery. But isn’t that preferable to several months of agony with no hope of relief? Or is drug induced oblivion preferable?

These are the main reasons for my position. My struggle is to justify the (extreme?) pro-life position with these situations. Please do not insert the God’s Will argument, because in all but my first and fourth scenarios, God’s Will has been mostly circumvented by modern medicine.
If these reasons are not enough, then we need to propose an amendment to Obamacare to address this issue. If we are lucky enough to have Obamacare repealed, then the issue needs to be addressed before any possible Constitutional Amendment is even considered.
Thank you,
John

On the other hand, criminalizing abortion is equally wrong. There are good reasons for allowing it to be used. First, there is no program to adequately care for abandoned/unwanted/neglected children. Children’s Services nation wide are woefully inadequate and, often, counterproductive. Second, if the life of the mother is at high risk, the mother should have the option without risk of reprisal or censure. Third, if the prognosis for the child is an extremely short, painful life, should not the mother have the option of protecting her child? Fourth, how about a woman (underage or mature) who is a victim of rape? Should she be forced to carry the fetus to term?

Thank you for replying.
“There must be some way to become a more humane society for our most vulnerable.” Yes, I do agree, but I also have strong reservations.
I believe that both extremes of the argument are wrong. “Abortion on Demand” is clearly wrong. That turns it into a thoughtless method of birth control. (This may seem heartless or callous, but I came to the conclusion that STD, particularly HIV, have done much to help limit this usage. One “fear tactic” the Left didn’t need to conjure up.)

I have finally given up on correcting the blunders of commentators. The greatest faux pas seem to be the use of "there" and "their". It always turns my stomach.
