Did he actually ever say the name of his fucking baby either? Yeah a lot of important shit got glossed over in this. If they wanted to take Barney in this direction they should have done it years ago. Develop the other characters involved and not repeat themselves for several seasons just to undo it all.

I don't know what the battle frontier is... WHAT IS HAPPENING!? WHAT IS A FRONTIER BRAIN!? HOW MUCH DID I MISS SINCE I STOPPED WATCHING DURING HOENN!? Also the beginning of Black and White says he's ten. I choose to ignore this and follow all laws of common sense.

Oh god you're right we are lucky they even mention the past AT ALL. I miss Brock and Misty *sniff* but this new stuff isn't as bad as I was expecting. ASH IS NOT STILL TEN THOUGH. I will forever deny that no matter how much the franchise insists otherwise. Its just not possible.

Decided on a whim to watch Pokémon Black and White on Netflix (possible nostalgia caused by Twitch Plays Pokémon). The different voices from when I was a kid are DESTROYING MY PERCEPTION OF REALITY. Does that ever happen to anyone else with anime?

Yeah Sin City was from back when Frank Miller only did the over-the-top noir stuff in a way that was actually fun so maybe this will just be fun like the last movie was.

Hey there's a trailer out for Frank Miller's Frank Miller's Sin City 2 with screenplay by Frank Miller directed by Frank Miller and based on the work of Frank Miller. If they put his name on it any more people won't be able to actually see the movie through all the Miller. I'm not gonna link to it, I just like making fun of Frank Miller. But soon enough we'll all get to make Miller Time jokes.

And actually at least three characters from previous series died. One in the first issue with no focus, and another in the second with no lines in the entire series. The third was a fan favorite that I actually wanted to read more about, who died for no reason than to make Apex look more threatening. Again, I try not to direct my anger at people who like the series, but this whole subject makes me see red. I apologize if this comes off as rude or insulting to you personally, I just miss my favorite character actually being a superhero and doing hero things.

Aside from all that, even if it all is outside Hopeless’s hands, he’s still an asshole. Through the entire run of Avengers Arena he taunted fans of the characters and made jokes about their deaths. I recall him telling a new fan who had just discovered Runaways that they should read the series before he kills Nico and Chase. One issue later he killed Nico. I don’t care if she came back later, that’s still a cruel joke. It doesn’t matter to me if the trolling creator is Joss Whedon or Dennis Hopeless, making fun of people for being sad about character’s deaths is still a horrible thing to do. There have been several times in the past year where I tried to work up the courage to read AA, but backed off it because Hopeless said or did something that pissed me off. His whole attitude was the exact opposite strategy writers should take when they know they are handling something controvertial. He fanned the flames instead of sympathizing with those hurt. He should have had the deaths of those he did kill off mean something. And even if he were a saint, you have pointed out that he was forced into making a battle royale series. It doesn’t matter in the end what he wants to do with the characters, the decision isn’t up to him. If the editors at Marvel want the magic goth girl to become a supervillain then it’ll happen, regardless of how much sense it makes for the character’s personality. They don’t see Nico the way we do after all. Please don’t take this as anger directed at you, or people who like AA and look forward to AU. I’m fine with people liking the concept of Avengers Arena even if I don’t. The concept could have actually been done well with different characters and a smaller cast. Hell, I’d have loved to see a more psychological take on the concept in the style of Saw or the Zero Escape series. I don’t think I’m overreacting though. I said it before, this is the writer who gave Nico a death scene where she didn’t once reflect back on the most important people in her life. These people who were her family and her responsibility, and there is no way it’s in character for Nico to just stop thinking about them like this. To me, even if she doesn’t become a villain, Nico is still being handled by a writer who doesn’t understand her very core. She’s more than just an angry magic goth girl. The whole idea of her character is to subvert that expectation. And sure I haven’t read anything but a few clips of Avengers Arena, but this take on Nico just isn’t Nico to me. Also health bars? That was a gimmick if I ever saw one.

I can respect your opinion, and I haven't read Avengers Arena, but I still don't like it. This is still a retread of material other writers have gone over before. The idea that Chase might kill anyone or become a supervillain is already a retread of a previous arc. That's pretty much what I've heard all over the place, Avengers Arena was pretty much just Joss's take on Nico done again and ignoring the fact that this was done already. It even ignored the powers she got from that arc! Furthermore, the ending to Avengers Arena (I heard about it) pretty much kills for me any respect for Hopeless as a writer (I may have gotten the details wrong, but didn't he upload the footage to youtube or something? That's really lazy). I'm fine with people liking Avengers Arena even if I don't, but this is still a step back for the characters. Runaways and Avengers Academy were about succeeding as a hero when everything else said they were better as villains. Undercover advertises itself as being about succumbing to that temptation. Even if Chase and Hazmat are more likely to be villains than Nico, its still the wrong direction.

Well Avengers Academy is a different series altogether that only briefly had Nico in it. One of the characters from that, Hazmat, is also in the running for becoming a supervillain. Its a shame, I really liked her. Avengers Arena is the series that tried to cash in on the hunger games/battle royale and started this whole "Nico and Chase are better as villains" trend. I haven't read any of the crossovers, so yeah trying to read anything these days pretty much requires it be something that isn't affected by other series. The more writers that handle a character, the more generic they become it seems.

Yes that Nico. Runaways was a gateway series for me too so this hurts. We don't know that she will be the one who becomes a villain, but a hack writer has been pushing her in that direction for a year now.

Yeah Nico seems too responsible to become a villain. Then again these are the same writers who put her in a life or death situation and never once had her think about her friends who were like her family and she was the maternal figure to. It seems like a lot of writers don't get the subtle nuance to Runaways characters or just don't care. Also Chase is gonna be in it, so good to know it will also be rehashing Brian K. Vaughan's last arc as well. The preview just promised that one of the leads would become a super villain by the end of the series.

It occurred to me a little while ago that Pacific Rim was a better example of the Star Trek message more than even some of the main Star Trek series at times. Hadn't really thought of it in relation to Into Darkness though. You have a point there.

Nico Minoru might become a super villain. Why the fuck does marvel think I want to see my favorite characters become villains? Seriously, this sounds terrible. It’s bad enough Avengers Arena happened at all, but this would be a lot easier to ignore if they stopped trying to get people to read it by using shock tactics. It barely worked for Avengers Arena, why the hell are they trying to shock us into buying stuff again? Forgive me if I’m misremembering, but wasn’t the general idea of Runaways that they could be heroes even when society told them they were destined to be evil? That was the point of Avengers Academy come to think of it. It’s like they’re sliding down the wrong side of a hill. While that theme of darkness was there in previous series, it was more about succeeding despite that. This and the other series seem to be suggesting that failure in that is the writer’s goal, not succeeding in the face of adversity. It’s just not very heroic. Sorry for the rant, but that has been building up for a year

GODDAMMIT MARVEL! I can't say specifics for what is pissing me off at the moment, because technically spoilers for Runaways and another series called Avengers Academy (sorta), but Marvel just released a preview for a series called Avengers Undercover about teen heroes being tempted by villainy and it pisses me off. And I know I shouldn't hate Marvel. Their just a faceless company. Plus they gave the world Kamala Khan last week. I just need a target for my rage.

Kamala Khan is an excellent character and I definitely look forward to seeing more with her in the future. I’m not Muslim, so I can’t comment on how her culture is portrayed, but from what I hear it was done well. I know that I could identify with Kamala more in one issue than I could with Carol Danvers in thirteen issues. I keep seeing people compare this issue to Spider-man and the parallel is definitely there. She’s an outsider that the audience can relate to. More than that though, she is the rare superhero that is optimistic and even a bit naïve. The universe hasn’t chewed her out yet, so she isn’t as cynical as literally every Marvel character ever. At least not for a while longer hopefully. The issue wasn’t without its flaws though. There was no action whatsoever, but I guess that’s normal for first issues in this day and age. I’m just used to reading in bulk. Also the opening was too abrupt for me. I don’t know what I would have done differently, but I’d do something to change the introduction. Bottom line I’m really looking forward to the next issue in March.
