Hi Steve. How did the event on 6th February go? I see that Surfers Against Sewage is also calling on a plastic-free UK parliament. I'm sure that as a combined force (together with other movements calling on the same principle) we will soon hear of some positive news.

Great article.. We can be guilty of either looking too close or too far away from home and forgetting the immediate surroundings we live in. The same goes for sustainability while at work. A recent survey suggests that only 15% of us recycle when at work. Shocking!!! Maybe it's because facilities are not in place or the bins that are made available aren't signposted well. I think all businesses should take a look at these https://www.unisanuk.com/products/bespoke-waste-r...

I bought LUSH shampoo and conditioner back in August, I am a convert. Not only does my hair look clean & soft, but I can go longer without washing. This is a plus point all round as it saves the planet in so many ways - less plastic, less water, less fuel (gas & electricity). Well done LUSH

Contact lenses, here in the UK, are classed as offensive waste (i.e. it's not hazardous but due to the nature of its use must to separated from the normal waste streams). I can't say I know of anyone that has access to this waste disposal stream so I guess, with the exception of return schemes that some brands supply, the only sensible route is to place in general waste which then ends up in landfill or recovery.

I must disagree with some comments here relating to food waste and any focus on it from the UK government (or any other interested party) is a waste of time. If we just look at the end product and the amount we waste, then we are not looking at the bigger picture. Food does not just magically appear on the supermarket shelves, it takes resource (manpower, water, fuel, transportation. When we waste food, we waste resource.

Also, to help support the original article from Dr Stephen Bates I have also found this article from Parliment UK (https://researchbriefings.parliament.uk/ResearchBriefing/Summary/CBP-7552). Yes, the stats differ from The Guardian but they are still staggering.

I feel we suffer from an age of indulgence and no matter what data you look at, what news report, surely waste is waste. Common sense needs to prevail - why would anyone want to waste their hard earned cash on food that they will not eat.

This sounds very promising indeed. Food waste is a huge problem here in the UK too. It's estimated that 22% of all household waste is food (inc. food scraps, food-soiled paper or general yard waste). it costs so much to produce this waste (energy, transportation, labour, land etc) it's too valuable a resource to simply discard.

Here's to a successful launch of this new solution to single-use disposable receptacles for food - and much more.

This is worrying news - I had assumed water treatment plants would filter out plastic - I was wrong. At least the issue has been identified with the hope that a solution identified and introduced. These pesky microbeads simply get everywhere so as we've read time and time again, we need to reduce the amount of plastic, failing that reuse and as a last resort recycle. Here's one great example of how Coca-Cola is helping us (the general public) re-use plastic, which in return helps them reduce their reliance on virgin plastic https://www.unisanuk.com/products/cafecrush/97

If each side of the 'table' had a better understanding of the issues, constraints and efforts of the other side then maybe there'd be less of a blame culture. We are all responsible, we are all accountable and it's up to us all to fix this 'human-made' problem. http://bit.ly/2NyVXIV
