GazetteOnline.com : Money mismanagement to blame for tuition rise

While not part of the University of Iowa I have opportunity to see the hard work, integrity and passion the top administrators put into their work. Is everything perfect - no but the continued haranguing of the State's Universities is overdone these days. State support for the Universities has dropped dramatically since 1981. Indeed over the last several months the programing and staff of University of Iowa have absorbed $65 million in cuts from the state. Real cuts are being made in programing and staff salaries. The University of Iowa has one of the lowest tuitions in the country. tuition would have to raise by over a thousand dollars to put it in the middle of the pact among public institutions in the Midwest. It is ranked as one of the nations 25 best buys among Universities.

GazetteOnline.com : Regents, don't pass the buck

Two important perspectives are missing from the editorial: Over the last 14 months the U of Iowa has absorbed $65 million dollars in cuts to its state funds. State funding as a percentage of the budget has dropped precipitously since 1981. Iowa is ranked among the nations 25 best buys in higher education and has one of the lowest instate tuitions in the country.
