Glenn Beck - The 912 Project : 8/3 Are You Talking To Your Representatives? They Should Be Home.

Is anyone going to go to Jim Matheson's office (D-Utah) on the 22nd? I'll be there! He may be a "blue dog", but I want to still make sure he knows where his constituents stand. So, if there are any Utah 9/12-ers going, let me know. Our tea party at the Federal Building was awesome on Tax Day - let's have an encore! (the good part is that it won't be snowing at this rally like it did in at our tea party in April!)

I'll be at the Salt Lake City Tea Party, 12-3. We're still trying to come up with some catchy signs (my brother jokingly suggested my husband carry one that says, "Unlike most protesters, I'm missing work to be here!") - any good ideas?? Anyway, my husband and I are so excited to go and I'm spreading the word! Let freedom ring!

I agree! Reminds me of a political cartoon I saw (I just looked it up) that said "France, Germany, Norway, Finland, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Algeria, Morocco, Romania, Kosovo, Panama, Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Netherlands, Luxemborg, Czechoslovakia, Afghanistan, Denmark, Kuwait, Egypt, Montenegro, New Guinea, Indonesia, Thailand, Greece, Russia, Tunisia, Ukraine, Albania, Hungary, Belgium, Austria, Libya, South Korea, Japan, Italy, soon Iraq - Another country free, once again, courtesy of the United States of America." Yeah, I think it's time the Europeans take the lead and let us take a break!

My brother worked in a supermarket and he said that a good many of the people turning the food stamps in could barely speak English. I may be jumping to conclusions, but I'm just saying...

I can attest to this, too! My father was in the military for a good part of my childhood and we made sacrifices - food stamps were never an option to them! My mom was just telling me how every year they qualified to get free school lunch for all of us kids (there were four of us), but they refused. We didn't resort to eating "other critters" : ) but we definitely went without. And, honestly, I think I'm better for it.

This is a hot-button issue with me. My brother worked in a supermarket in a resort town and he was always amazed by what people bought with food stamps - Cheetos, beer, pop tarts, that sort of stuff. My own sister-in-law is on WIC, even though she and her husband have two cars (both purchased new), a new motorcycle, a $200,000 house, and cable tv (my husband and I are raising our family on one income, with only one car - no cable tv here!). Often, she'd try to give away some of the food she got on the program (they had to fill their quota, even if they couldn't use all of it, so that they wouldn't lose future benefits), but I always refused. Even though it was just a gallon of milk (and who wouldn't mind buying one less gallon of milk?), I couldn't bring myself to take it. My parents went through a lot of tough economic times when I was growing up (a one-income home, with my father working almost at minimum wage), but they NEVER resorted to government assistance. I can remember eating rice and milk for breakfast (and it wasn't that long ago, back in the 80's). For them, it was a matter of pride, from lessons of self-reliance and thrift passed from their parents. I follow their example today and I hope to teach my son the same lessons in this age of entitlement. I agree with many of the posts - we need a return to living within our means. My church has a welfare system that I think the U.S. Government could learn a lot from. The bishop assesses a family's need and determines if they qualify for assistance with food (my sister-in-law and her husband on WIC applied to the Church first, but the bishop didn't see a legitimate need, considering their circumstances). When that need is truly required, the Church uses offerings donated from the members and the money is to buy the basics - milk, bread, flour, cheese, etc. - all of which produced at Church-owned centers where the members receiving the Church aid (and those who aren't) volunteer. It creates a cycle of productivity and accountability, which is lacking in the Government program (more info on my church's program can be found here: www.providentliving.org ) I'm all for helping those who are truly needy, but only if they're also willing to help and better themselves in the process.
