National Motorists Association Blog : Off The Rails

Oh yeah i was just thinking, you know how they have limited our freedoms in cars because we are on public roads? Well if we start privatizing highways and toll roads then wouldn't we have more protections in our cars because we are on private roads? Something to think about as a legal argument as more and more states are selling off their highways or attempting to.

I totally agree. I preach this stuff to my friends, they look at me like I'm an idiot because they don't care. Despite the fact that cops will pretty much get into your car if they want, I still advise everyone I know to never allow a search even if they have nothing to hide. When you give permission to search the cops can ruin your belongings and there's nothing you can do about it, unless you said no and they searched anyway. I would say the War on Drugs is responsible for most of our erosion's of our rights. After all how often would cops ask to search your car if drugs were legal? Probably not as often as they do now. Because really how many people are carrying around other illegal items like guns? That pretty girl that just got pulled over might smoke weed, but I doubt she owns something else that's illegal.

National Motorists Association Blog : The Principle Of Vehicle Safety Inspections

I'm glad here in MD we don't have these inspections unless your selling your car. However we do have pointless VEIP inspections (vehicle emissions) that cost $14 because of the bay. Oh the air pollution, how will the bay survive. You used to have a huge tube put over your exhaust to measure the emissions, now they just hook a computer cord to your car and most things are exempt or N/A. Making it pointless, i understand why they originally started the program but with today's cars, it is just pointless and a waste of time and money. Why is my reputation number so low? I must have pissed off some people somewhere, but i agree and support most of the comments here. I don't understand this stupid rating system.

Great Story, I feel the same way about Marijuana Prohibition, but the time will come, eventually. No matter how long bad policies stay in place, over time they will be realized as bad policies and changed for better or worse and some quicker than others. If it wasn't for your group we maybe just finally repealing the 55 mph NMSL or still suffering with it.

National Motorists Association Blog : Life in the Slow Fast Lane

Yeah, I hate driving in VA now, I almost got a reckless driving ticket. I was borderline and the cop didn't want to do that to me. I thought the law was found unconstitutional, but i believe they past another law that did the same thing basically, but was constitutional. Anyways it sucks. And when your a delivery driver it's even worse, people yell at you and motion you to slow, sometimes even when your doing the speed limit or even just 5 over. I had a guy tell me if he saw me going that fast on the road again he would break my window. He walked out in front of my car to make me stop, just to tell me that. He was yelling something like blah blah blah my 2 year old blah blah. The kid wasn't even close to the roadI wanted to tell him the next time he walks out in front of my car his child would be fatherless, but I didn't want to escalate the situation. What ever happened to personal responsibility? Sadly cops nowadays are on a mission. My dad would tell me stories about encounters he had with the police in the past. And your right you could talk to them, they were personable. You could get away with things that now a days you would be spending thousands to defend yourself. Cops now a days are mean and don't know how to handle the public. Cops should be out there to keep the peace. Just because someone is breaking the law doesn't mean you have to arrest them. If you can resolve the issue in the field, for example "don't do this again" or "do such and such and we'll leave and let you on your way," then do that. Don't be so quick to issue a citation or arrest someone.

National Motorists Association Blog : Public Hearings: How Have Our Expectations Sunk So Low?

Yeah it is sad and traffic laws are not the only time politicians pull out the what about the children remark. We've been fighting a war on drugs or as I like to call it a war on freedom and the number one thing always brought up is I don't want kids doing drugs. Well guess what they are already doing them and often times its kids that are the drug dealers. But people are too stupid to realize that. They think if we legalize any drug that the masses will go out to the local drug store and start injecting heroin or snorting coke. When in reality people are not going to do that. Of course with this red light example it is if we get rid of the cameras more kids will be killed and more accidents will occur which is ridiculous. Just like that it is unfounded that if you increase speed on highways they too will become less safe which is also unfounded. The thing I have learned over the years is the correct solution to the problem is usually less obvious and more controversial than actual policies that are chosen. If anyone has ever taken a Physics class, then you know what I'm talking about. When I first took a physics class my world was turned upside down, the way i thought the world worked was not actually how it worked at all.

So what? Your telling me a 7th grader does not know what oral sex is? Really?! When I was in middle school we told each other all kinds of dirty jokes. We knew what sex was, what oral sex was ect. So what?! what's the big deal? Kids now a days know a lot more than people want to admit and if we can't give surveys to figure out whats going on with our youth than how will we be able to make sensible policies in the future? Stop sheltering your children, the world is what it is and I for one when I have children will show them what the world truly looks like, not this imaginary world with no drugs or sex.

That's the one good thing I can say about Maryland tickets is the fine on the ticket is the fine, there is no tacked on fees. Unlike in Virginia, even their repair tickets has fines and fees. At least in MD repair tickets don't carry a fine you just got to get your car fixed.

I reallllllly hate bikes. especially on busy roads. But at the same time i want to be safe. MD passed a law last year that requires you to give at least 3 feet of space. which is quite a bit. The driving slow thing, i swear they do it on purpose. One of my co-workers was on a delivery where he was caught behind a guy doing 25 in a 40! So he got all up on his ass. Then the guy got pissed and they actually pulled up beside each other and started arguing. The guy was pissed he was all up on him. While my co-worker yelled back well maybe if you weren't doing 25 in a 40 maybe I wouldn't be so close. The waiting for green on a right turn on read pisses me off to no end. I mean there is no cars for like 3 miles and their just sitting there. What are you doing? eating a sandwich? Go Already. What are you afraid of? I'm not a big horn honker but maybe I should more often. My grandmother drives slow, real slow. like slower than the limit, especially when shes talking. But she admits it and stays off interstate highways because she is smart enough to realize it's safer for her to stay away. I commend her for that. I was on a delivery the other day and this guy slowly walks out into the road, so now I have to stop and of course I'm wondering what the hell is he doing. He yells for me to roll down my window and starts yelling at me for going to fast over the speed hump and for speeding up after the speed hump. Telling me that kids run out into the road ect. Points to his 2 year old on the side of the road. Mind you when I came down the road the first time I was not worried about anyone even close to the road. Not only that on this particular stretch of the roads there is another parking lot and then the town homes. Anyways I was doing 35 mph tops on this 25 mph road. Then at the end of the one sided conversation he tells me he's going to break my window if he sees me do it again. I tell you the thing we endure as pizza delivery drivers is just unreal at times. Just because you have that car topper on your car everyone feels the need to put in their 2 cents about how you drive. Never mind their next door neighbor that goes careening down the road at twice the speed limit. Guess what we're all safe drivers, you can't have more than 2 points on your license to be a delivery driver. I assume some places are even stricter. If anything we're more likly to be better drivers than you are, being that driving is our job, you jerk. I wanted to tell this guy the next time he walks out in front of my car his child will be fatherless, but chose to not make the situation any worse than it was.

National Motorists Association Blog : Driver Convicted Of Speeding Without Ever Receiving Ticket

Randy, I think you make the dumbest comments on here. You can't tellme you have not gone at least 1 to 5 mph over the speed limit in your life. In Baltimore city over 2000 speed citations were approved by a dead police officer. THese programs are not accurate and in some cases you can't even fface the accuser. Your sitting here telling us that technology is 100% accurate, which it is not. Innocent people get tickets all the time. The cameras make errors all the time. Then the people who approve the tickets make even more errors. No one has time to deal with this bullshit. Right now in one city in maryland the cameras are picking up large trucks and city buses that are going 75mph in a 25. IDK about you but I VERY HIGHLY doubt city buses are traveling 75 in a 25!

National Motorists Association Blog : Driving Etiquette: Avoid These Common Driving Errors

In MD you are not obligated to get over out of the left lane. It really sucks. They tried to pass the law, but lawmakers liked the fact that there was someone making everyone do the limit. They were too concerned about the guy driving the speed limit getting the ticket. Also you don't have to use your turn signal to change lanes in MD, only when making left or right hand turns. I never understood the stop merge. That is so much harder to drive and just creates a chain reaction. I'm thankful it's never happened to me.

National Motorists Association Blog : Sticker Shock Is Only The Beginning

also i highly doubt insurance is cheaper because it is required by law. It would be cheaper if it wasn't because the insurance industry would be competeing for your dollar rather than getting it automatically. It's a supply and demand issue. For example say we have 4 insurance companies and 1,000,000 drivers in a state and there is no law requirement. So lets assume 25% of the driver do not want to purchase insurance. Not only would these companies be trying to lure you into by insurance they are competing with each other. If you increase the insurance companies to 8 then it gets even cheaper because there is more competition. If the amount of drivers go up to 2,000,000 the rates go up because there are more drivers and more people wanting insurance. If the amount of people with no insurance goes down to say 12%, again the insurances go up because there is higher demand for the product. If 75% of the drivers no longer want insurance then the price goes down because they want your business. Now if the state says everyone must buy and we have 2,000,000 drivers the rate goes up. We now have (assuming everyone is following the law) 100% of the drivers with insurance. The rates now go up because of higher demand. If the companies that offer insurance now merge from 8 to 4 prices now go up because there are fewer companies offering the service. This is simple supply and demand curves. look it up or take an economics class, it's the same for any product or industry. Simple economics.

IDK about your insurance quotes. I have a 99 solara and I was paying $1000 a year 2 years ago. I had very good credit, if i had bad credit it would have been 1200. I'm in a somewhat low risk area. When I turned 24 my insurance went down to 660 a year. I got into a minor fender bender, lost my safe driver discount and now I'm back to paying a little over 900 per year again. This is for a car that is worth somewhere between 2 and 3,000 dollars for the milage and condition its in. Only 8,000 miles away from 200,000 and still sounds great.
