Wow, thank you so much for that piece by Laurie Penny. It was exactly what I needed to read today. My husband and I were just talking last night about how to balance self care with engagement in this difficult time.

It also reminded me of "Sick Woman Theory," a piece by Johanna Hedva that I have been telling everyone about: http://www.maskmagazine.com/not-again/struggle/si...

"The most anti-capitalist protest is to care for another and to care for yourself. To take on the historically feminized and therefore invisible practice of nursing, nurturing, caring. To take seriously each other’s vulnerability and fragility and precarity, and to support it, honor it, empower it. To protect each other, to enact and practice community. A radical kinship, an interdependent sociality, a politics of care."

Thank you for this! I am feeling super inspired this morning as well, between The Toast awesomeness and HRC's post. I want to do more writing. I want to apply for that promotion at work. I want to get off this couch and get dressed! (once I stop reading comments, of course. ;)

I posted about this in a reply to someone below in this same thread, but if you're into writing, we have a Toastie writing group! It's on slack, we post prompts and do critiques of each other's work. It's been really helpful for me in terms of motivation, improving my skills, and feeling like it's ok to take my writing seriously.

Thank you Madame President!

(Does this mean Hillary is going to join our Slack Team? Quick, someone send her an invite!)

Oh, and for more queer sci-fi/fantasy... it looks like the Lambda Literary award does have a category for LGBT sci-fi/fantasy/horror, so you could check back over their annual lists of winners:

Slow River by Nicola Griffith! The main character is a lesbian engineer. There is a romance, but it's somewhat dark. Also it involves wastewater treatment, so like, all my grad school friends and I were thrilled. :)

For PoC lead characters - check out N.K. Jemisin's books. She is herself a woman of color and her books are amazing and full of richly imagined worlds of diverse characters. The Fifth Season is incredible. It's the first of a series. I've also read the Inheritance Trilogy and generally liked it, though I thought the first book was definitely the best.

I am actually really hopefully that someday I will be carrying my Toast Tote on the train and someone will recognize it and we will enjoy a brief, joyful reunion.
