KOMO - Seattle, WA : Politics getting ugly for local congressional hopefuls | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Weather, S

But that is *exactly* my point; why is this "news" article focusing on the controversy of "WHO said what" as opposed to "one side made claims X, how ACCURATE are these claims?" I don't have the resources to chase down every claim - but that is *supposed to be* part of the job of the news media, is it not? That way, the voter, most of whom are busy with other things, CAN do other things. This story is nothing more than a "claim-vs-counter-claim by the campaigns" press release. And, because teh candidates KNOW they can spin the media like a toy, they don't HAVE to focus on issues, which is a dis-service to us all.

Ah, we are talking past one another. I would agree that the girl in the picture with the story doesn't look 21 right now, at least not in that pic. My anecdote was about the *potential harm* that can come from such a misrepresentation, as demonstrated from another somewhat similar case I'm aware of. And, unless you are a monk, you are probably aware of how much "better judgment" a young, drunk, single male has in the presence of "fresh and available meat," to put it crudely. (Having seen the effects of alcohol on the brain in others is one reasons I'm a teetotaler)

Dim lights, a few beers, loud music at the club, knowing the bouncer had already admitted her, lead to poor judgment. My former co-worker said she was Asian (Vietnamese, IIRC), looked old for her age, and a LOT like her sister. But the fact is, *she* committed fraud for kicks, but *he* went to jail and has a record. VERY not-cool. In this case, the young lady did the right thing, and kudos to her for it; it prevented temptation from rearing its ugly head. If anyone else found out about it at her school, there would be a LOT of peer pressure of all kinds to use it and "make the most of the opportunity." She'd suddenly be EVERYONE'S best friend if she used it, and kicked out of the "best" cliques if she didn't; a recipe for disaster.

It gives her the ability to totally destroy a man's life. Go to a bar, get let in, get a drink, get taken home, get caught the next morning, have mom press charges, and he's branded a sex-predator for life because some ditz thought it would "be cool to pretend to be an adult." Nearly identical thing happened to a former co-worker of mine (underage chick "borrowed" her older sisters ID). NO, it's NOT a jackpot; it's trouble.

Now there is a most special kind of idiot - one not only with a PhD, but also several published books and a Nobel Prize (in economics, which shows what THAT'S worth).
"Asian overlords"? Which ones did you have in mind? The Japanese? (DEEP in debt and suffering a catastrophic demographic implosion) The Chinese? (Elites prepping to flee the country, hard landing and implosions - fiscal, demographic, environmental - on the near horizon) The Indians? (they, or at least many of the leadership and business community, already speak English, and they have a bureaucracy that makes DC look positively trim and efficient) Koreans? (good tech, but precious little else) The Vietnamese? (Yyyyaaaaahhhh, right) Russians, Pakistanis, Kazakhstan, Thailand, etc? Not bloody likely.

Hey, at least he didn't get a 4.0 from USC :-) I've got degrees from two universities, and attended three others for various things, and teaching endorsements from another, and everyone in my immediate family with a degree or two has gotten them from a different college or university (8 that I know of for sure). *shrug* I'm a firm believer that it's what you learned, now what sheepskin you have, that is important.
If the facts hurt, then who says them isn't relevant. If a prospective representative (of any party) is incompetent, then knowing that is important. Spending brain-cycles and ad-money on the "who said it?" vs "is it accurate and correct?" and "I don't like your plan" vs "here is MY plan"is *precisely* what's wrong with politics today.
Lots of built in assumptions, there. 1. Poly Sci is not the typical major of geniuses. 2. You are assuming that the ability to tweet equals "internet savvy;" arguably, it's the opposite 3. Politicians will accept volunteer, slave, and cheap labor from those with all ability levels, if it means one more vote 4. FAR TOO MANY people are old and inexperienced - they have never been far from the bubble-wrap and protection of mommy and daddy.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Best restaurant pancakes | Consumer News | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, Breaking News | KOMO News

Home-made sourdough is THE way to go, IMO. Cheaper, too. Make them just about every Sunday. Home-made oatmeal buttermilk pancakes come in a close second (spouse makes those). Every restaurant pancake I've ever eaten has been decent (to one degree or another), but none as good as home made. Of course, when you get into other breakfasts, like biscuits & gravy or hash-browns, the product is wildly all over the map, from GREAT to God-awful. Oddly, both the best and worst B&G I've ever been served (not home-made) were both at the same army base during basic training, just different chow halls. (Army Frisbees, er, I mean "pancakes" were not much to write home about.)

Perhaps, perhaps not. I have NO love for drunk driving - a friend and mentor of mine from my younger days died that way. But, in the US we have this little thing called "due process," and cops taking shiny things from people because they want to *isn't* part of it. It is an absolute corruption of the system, and any abuse of the trust given to the folks in uniform should be punished VERY harshly.

Buffalo Bore hard cast in 44 Mag would be an excellent round for handgun hunting or self-defense against bear. Big enough to be fairly effective (penetration is reportedly quite good) but small enough that you won't pick it for your first option to deal with bears at close range, thus encouraging prudent / cautious behavior. Very good choice.

What makes the MagSafe "safe" is their rapid fragmentation, resulting in limited penetration. That's fine for dealing with human varmints or thin-skinned critters like dogs or raccoons, but exactly the *wrong* ammo for bear protection. When dealing with larger critters, like bears, you WANT penetration - more is better. Hard-cast lead, FMJ, or whatever is your preferred method of maximizing the length of hole you make. A brown bear skull can even stop a 308 round of it's much of a glancing shot. From the front (charging you), you might easily need to go through three feet of fur, muscle, fat, bone, and stuff before hitting the heart, and while a lung-shot may kill him (eventually), it won't stop him. You want DEEP holes when dealing with bears, to get to the heart or central nervous system, to STOP the attack. You want enough energy left in the projectile that if it hits bone, it'll break it.

Yup. Glock 20 is my standard "woods sidearm" these days. Relatively light, 15 rounds at ~600 ft*lb per, much more comfy to pack than a huge revolver. When deer hunting, of course, it's something more like a 6.5x55 or .30-06. Scariest bear encounter I ever had was duck hunting when I was a kid, maybe 16. Between the car and beaver ponds were some heavy woods and brush, and all I had was a 20 ga double barrel. Suddenly there was a LOT of commotion in the brush, and max visibility was maybe 10 feet, and I was a good 15 feet from my hunting partner. Deep, fast, cold stream on one side, bear-filled brush on the other, rough trail, lousy visibility, and bear that was obviously having a bad hair day (and they have a LOT of hair!). Never saw it, only the upper parts of the bushes it was plowing through shaking. Even having two slugs in the chambers for the "bear country transit" wasn't too much comfort under those conditions. We wound up getting away, and learned later there was both a mama brown bear with cubs AND and a big injured black bear spotted in the area the day before. NOT the most relaxing day of duck hunting in my life - and we had to cross back through that area again later to get back to the car.
