My dad used to randomly come into my room and say "Good luck, we're all counting on you." A quote from the very dad movie Airplane.
Also he says gesundheit instead of bless you.

Yes! So many people get complacent and forget the gravity of the situation while driving! Hurtling down the road at high speeds in a machine capable of killing is not the time for multi-tasking!
I just got my license last year at 24 ( I also had all sorts of cultural/personal history excuses)
I've been driving a lot lately and it does get easier and a little less stressful each time. Some friends have given me helpful tips and pieces of advice, one of which is that no one wants to get into an accident. So as long as you pay attention and don't make any dangerous decisions yourself you're usually okay. Another tip is have a "commute" where you drive the same route regularly and get used to it. That way you get to experience feeling comfortable behind the wheel.

I own it but haven't gotten to it yet. An old hairpin list made me pick it up, actually.

Thanks! I don't begrudge her focus on middle-class girls since she addresses it directly. The sources were pretty helpful and will make my reading list grow by a billion. One book looks particularly interesting, Wake Up Little Susie: Single Pregnancy and Race Before Roe v. Wade . The site for the book also has a related reading section with around 15 other titles.

And I think maybe a search around j-stor would yield some more recent work about how the internet, cell phones and social media factor into all of this.

Her other book on anorexia also sounds like a good read, have you read that?

Anybody want to talk about The Body Project by Joan Brumberg? I just finished it today and have some feelings. It was good but I wish there was more. The Beauty Myth left me with the same feeling. The issue is that it felt a little like preaching to the choir? Like I already knew a lot of this stuff because it's been in the social consciousness since the book came out almost 20 years ago and I had the privilege of parents who never put the pressure of beauty standards on me themselves. Also I wanna know more about poor women and women of color since she mainly worked from sources about middle-class and white girls. Any recommendations for more up to date and more inclusive books about this topic? Or any dealing with the same thing but looking at boys?

Story time even though this post is from a day ago. I'm going to share a full-proof tactic I use to fall asleep when my brain decides to go down All Your Failings Avenue at night.
Step one: Have a favorite period-piece drama. Mine is Agatha Christie's Poirot
Step two: Imagine an episode that would include your friends and family. Who are the nobility? House, Hotel, or Resort? Relationships? What is everyone wearing? I usually drift off before I have to think up an actual crime or plot.

I have finished reading. That sounds terrifying and thank the Gods for Brenda. Rest easy and let the storm pass.

I have not finished reading this yet but I had to come down here to let you now something. While you were in Winslow you probably saw at least 5 people I am related to. Maybe my Great Aunt even became your friend.

5th week over. These children are so bizarre, it's really all there is to be said.
I miss the days of internet-ing all day long.
