I wasn't forbidden from reading anything as a kid, and in fact rather than ever have The Talk with me my parents handed me books about sex at a very young age and I was on my own from there.

I do remember being at Barnes & Noble once when I was in elementary school and this lady who worked there saw me browsing books and picking up Hatchet, and she told me it would be too "mature" for me. And I was pissed and obvs read it immediately.
