As a school psychologist this type of treatment should have never occurred. I agree that there are two sides to every story and we do not know all the details. However, the teacher and other school personnel should have contacted the mother regarding his behavior far before this event ever occurred. Home school collaboration is very important to student outcomes, whether it be academic or behavioral. Children have a right to be educated and it is the schools job to help children learn expected classroom behavior. I work in some schools were I have been involved with MANY children who have challenging behaviors. Moreover, it is educators jobs to help figure out how to help the student in the most way possible. Ask a psychologist or counselor to help develop an Functional Behavior Assessment and Positive Behavior Support Plan. Let's be proactive not reactive.
