KOMO - Seattle, WA : Strike ends as Boeing machinists ratify new contract | KOMO News - Seattle, Washington | Boeing

... and a lot better than the $60 we were frozen at when the sale was made to Onex, but I've never counted on Boeing/Spirit to fund my retirement either so all is still good. Congrats on the contract.

Congrats to all of you. I hope the contract is what you want and all goes well. It has been interesting reading the comments for me since I work for another company, the name changed with the sale and that is about all though. Anyway, stay safe, and remember to enjoy life and family. No man on his deathbed ever wished he would have spent more time at work...........

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Boeing strike talks go deep into Sunday night; resume Monday | KOMO News - Seattle, Washington | Boe

We have seen the out sourcing of jobs that move parts within the factory at the company I work for. The people moving the parts are clueless on how to move anything without damaging the parts. Their turnover is high so experienced help within the contractor's group is minimal. These people do not follow any rules in regard to driving and appear to care less. It was extremely sad to see a company manager tout how much they were saving and not also showing all of the issues they were creating. They are saving money in wages, but the wages being paid allow the contract employee to get fed up and go find another job easily at the same or better wage. It is not a career job for most of these people. They could just as easily outsource any job, but you get what you pay for, both in performance and loyalty to the company.

Bothellben - This is very similar to the individual that crossed in '95 and everyone was supportive of him. He didn't just walk across, he talked with people and tried everything to stay out. It just wasn't possible. No one ever said a negative word that I am aware of.

Well, most of your posts remind me of the ID-10-T errors as far as being of value. Ah, maybe I should remind jt to remove the dashes and replace 10 with io in that error message.

jtwoods: I've known of several situations where an employee who crossed the line was called a SCAB, and I also know of employees who did holding up their paychecks to show strikers as they crossed the line. These people get the treatment they deserve. I've also known of one instance that an employee crossed after talking with his co-workers and was treated very well. He did not have an option to stay out and the Union recognized that. The Union had tried to help, but this was an instance out of everyone's control. He felt ashamed of the situation, but people understood what was happening. Some may think he should have stayed out, and I know that is what he was wanting to do, but wants are sometimes overruled. I am just glad the Union understood and showed that they truly cared for a brother in serious difficulty.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : 787 plant faces closure due to Boeing strike | KOMO News - Seattle, Washington | Local

wolfshead - you have to remember that the contract was voted against by the membership and the strike authorized by the membership. You cannot assume that people will lay down because the company tells you that it is a good contract. The process is a negotiation between TWO entities that have both common and different goals. One of the common goals is a ratified contract, another is a company that is solvent and producing profits that ALL can share in. When one party wants to implement something that is damaging to the other, you can bet that the damaged party will object with the legal tools at their disposal. From what I see, Boeing and the Union leadership are looking out for what they feel are their best (company's and union membership) interests, and hopefully they are finding compromises that will result in a ratified contract. No one wants a strike IMO.

Because the vast majority of people have never worked for Boeing and really don't have a clue. They look at the hourly wage, then look at their own and based on that the IAM appears "greedy". If someone were to work for Boeing, then maybe they would understand the issues that are actually involved. Saying that, I would still rather work for Boeing than the company they sold us to. Also as I said in another reply above, look out for 2010, because I foresee the company I work for getting hit with an IAM strike.

JIT was supposed to be the next big thing, but I fail to see the efficiency in producing a single (maybe two) parts, then the time required to break down and set back up. One process I am aware of adds an additional 30 minutes minimum to make these single part runs. I can see it for an AOG, but not for a production run.

I wonder what the impact will be when at least one major parts supplier goes on strike in 2010. It will be interesting to see how Boeing responds when they are not receiving 737 fuselages, or parts for their other aircraft.

Although I read in later posts that you were joking, I would suggest getting a tour of a Boeing or Spirit Aerosystems (used to be the Wichita Divison of Boeing) facility where IAM workers produce amazing parts and aircraft. I've been lucky enough to see the parts turned out by people who are very good at their job for a long time and it still impresses me every day. The military aircraft are extremely impressive, but w/o the skill of the pilots they are just something to look at. The pilots of the USA are the best in the world and when you combine them with the capabilities of our aircraft, you have an almost unbeatable combination.

I know the BECU is open to the public, but I thought it is an "employees" credit union, and deferring a payment would make sense for the employees and BECU. On strike maybe, but still Boeing Employees. The BECU also knows that by deferring a payment they will have the employees accounts when the strike is over - where would they be if word got out that they did not help the employees when they needed it? It would not take too much negative publicity about BECU's handling of employees in a bind to cause a cascade effect of employees pulling out of there.

Layoffs are happening in a lot of places. We were just told that layoffs will possibly happen in mid November. I "think" they meant to say furlough, but I could be mistaken. I don't know much about layoffs and thought 60 day WARN notices had to go out, but if there is a legal loophole, I am sure the company will find it.

Come work for Spirit, the part of the Boeing Wichita Division that was sold, and you will feel worse than that. Contract expires in 2010 for the IAM and all I am hearing is that it will be a very, very rough negotiation (read into that as much as you want regarding what the outcome will be).

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Machinists' talks with Boeing break off | KOMO News - Seattle, Washington | News

We were hoping for a quick resolution to the strike at the company I work for. We are a supplier for Boeing and are looking at layoffs. Still, we know that the IAM is fighting a fight that we will all eventually benefit from. The loss of jobs within a company to outsourcing is usually a bad thing. The companies always say that "no one will lose their jobs because of it", we also know that is not completely true. We have seen some of our jobs outsourced and the quality of those providing the services is very poor. Why? Because they (the contractors) don't have a real stake in our company and being paid $10 - $12 an hour allows them to find other jobs at the same pay. A poor analogy would be the worker at McDonalds - get tired of the BS, go to another fast food place to work....

Russ 1590, as a manager who used to work for Boeing before they sold our division out, I can tell you I would prefer union employees and a solid contract to work from. The contract helps protect employees from managers who feel like they are a gift to the world - everything they (managers) do is right, and the workers are clueless. Given the framework of a contract to work with makes my job as a manager very easy. I also know as a manager, I benefit from everything the union members benefit from. Managers who don't know that they would not be paid what they are if it wasn't for the union need to work in a non-union shop. Non-union shops (employees) also benefit from the union's efforts because they compete for many of the same employees I don't like strikes, but you have to take a stand for what you believe in. For those walking the line, I say thank you for what you are doing. ..and yes, I am dedicated to my job in management.
