I was pleasantly surprised that they kept up the animation quality of this episode. It could easily have been the case, that they merely ramped up the quality for the S4 opener. It wasn't, and since this episode also shows the same animation level then it makes me interested to see if it'll continue. The smooth motion, the many new character positions and facial expressions were there. The backgrounds were rich. Lots of new angles. So the animation receives 10/10, MLP has never looked better. Personally I think both of us will agree that this episode could have done more. The plot is basically just four of the Mane Six running around and unwittingly scaring each other, under slightly questionable pretexts. The viewer knows it, but they don't yet. Then it became a waiting game to see if a real danger would show up, only it turned out to be Pinkie Pie (which was a bit predictable). However it still supplied a good deal of silly filly comedy (which I don't mind your taste might differ). All the characters were... well... in character. Twilight is level-headed in the face of something spooooky, and the others reacted much the same way as in the original Zecora episode. We did get a little bit of world building: its now firmly established that Celestia and Luna used to be fillies. I supported that notion the moment I heard Lauren saying that this is what she had in mind; them growing up together in that castle. We get a tiny window into that period. The backgrounds, the armours, hint of a past as well which fans are free to fill in as they please. However we didn't exactly get a story about the castle, or what Luna and Celestia were like as fillies, except that the castle was a bit of a funhouse for Luna and Celestia, and Celestia loved her little sister and enjoyed spooking her. What we got was a story about four the Mane Six being scared silly of each other. The episode did have some cool ominous foreshadowing: that strange pony creature we saw... will that be plot relevant eventually? The dialogue between Spike and Twilight about the organ implies that its important as well. Twilight Sparkle: [reading] Soon the Organ to the Outside will be finished. I can hardly wait. Spike: What's the "Organ to the Outside"? Twilight Sparkle: [happily] I have no idea! Since Meghan is planning on having some sort of continuity through at least a good deal of the episode (they need to find six keys after all) I can't help but think that this organ will be used again. Then again maybe not. Still it made me think about how this story arc is going to develop. There isn't much of character building here, except that Twilight was calm because he had read about all the strange traps in the castle. So its slice-of-life comedy, with a bit of world building and foreshadowing. It could have done more, I think, without compromising on its concept. So I give it 7/10. Its good, and its more than merely entertaining in and of itself, but it doesn't have more than that. I feel there's too much time spent on a plot point that grew slightly old by the 11th minute mark. They an missed opportunity to escalate the situation into a real peril, or give us more about the princesses. Here's how my scale is calibrated, yours might differ: 10/10 is pristine (If there's anything bad to say about it, then its only small irrelevant details that didn't stand out while watching it.) 9/10 is great (Episode to gush about. S4 opener. Only a few minor blemishes that held back enjoyment.) 7/10 is good (If a movie is this good, then its good enough to recommend to non-fans.) 6/10 is alright (EqG and maybe Spike at Your Service has earned this in my book. Has entertainment value in itself, but probably not to non-fans) 5/10 is forgettable. (Cow&Chicken which I remember only for images of a red guy walking on his butt cheeks.) 3/10 is not something I'd recommend at all, even to fans. (Simple not entertaining at all. Utterly boring without any redeeming value.) 2/10 is so bad its good. (Plan 9 from Outer Space) 1/10 is so bad it hurts. I think we need all kinds of tempers here. Both sides feel that the other side is very antagonistic towards them. You won't believe (rhetorical: actually I'm fairly certain you know) what has been implied about my intelligence level for not expressing hatred for EqG. I enjoyed the movie, thought it had flaws and gave it a mediocre rating. However I didn't hate it. But it is true that crap is flung between pro-whatever and anti-thesame's. However neither side can really use this kind of antagonism. You don't like the episode? Or you think its mediocre? If you've stated your reasons I want to read them and I respect your opinion. I'm still a bit undecided (which means its definitely not a 9/10). I'm tempted at giving it 7/10, but I need to watch it again.
