Zaph239 and botzarelli are spot on. So far the DfE has only said a quarter of Year 10 should return at anyone time before the summer, with absolutely no provision for Years 7, 8 and 9 and nothing public said about September. For youngsters this is woefully inadequate.

An excellent article.
The priority now, however, must be to get as many children back to school ASAP. This is proving more slow and more difficult than anyone ever expected. We need to see clear direction from above.
Only one article so far has offered a sensible, workable solution (see Tim Clark, 30th May) - we need more such practical suggestions as we don’t seem to be getting them from the unions or the government.

Only just read this.
Why oh why aren’t more suggestions like this being published?
My local secondary school is saying it can’t cater for more than 30 kids at a time (it has more than 1,000 on its books) and in another, only a quarter of the staff are prepared to return to work. Both schools are publicly stating that the reason for this is that they have had no advice, guidance or support from government, national or local, and are therefore unsure how best to proceed. It’s also clear that nationally, many parents are keeping little kids at home.
Well done Mr Clark - you clearly know what you are talking about. I hope someone in the a department for Education reads it.

For once I agree with HF001.
We should take advantage of our majority and have a clear out of the disloyal and the lazy.

An excellent and well written article.
Of course the government will be overwhelmingly concerned with seeing us through the next few weeks/months, but this must not be at the expense of long term planning for the future. A Ministry of Reconstruction was set up in 1917, to look at issues such as housing and employment, and again in November 1943, almost two years before the end of the War. The popularity of the Beveridge Report (it’s guesstimated that 95% of the population at least knew about it within a fortnight of publication) and Labour’s highly successful 1945 manifesto, “Let us Face the Future”, which bluntly stated that, “ Victory in War must be followed by a Prosperous Peace”, both suggest that whatever the crisis, people want to look ahead to a better and brighter future. One reason for Churchill losing in 1945 was because he concentrated primarily on his War record and on finishing the War in the Far East. As Churchill biographer, Boris should be all too well aware of that.
