You don't use Absinthe for the iPhone4, it is an A4 based phone. Use the latest version of Redsn0w to jailbreak your iPhone 4.

I'd try a restore to stock 4.3.1 and give redsn0w another shot, if you're using it on windows make sure you're in compatibility mode and running as an administrator.

Yes, if you use redsn0w it will hacktivate your phone and allow you to get past the screen.

It's the first line in bold on this blog entry. "WARNING WARNING — ultrasn0w users don’t update yet! See a few paragraphs down!" Ultrasn0w doesn't work on 4.3.1 yet.

Restore again, set up as new phone, don't restore from backup. If you're using an official carrier (regardless of if you want your phone unlocked or not) then do not hacktivate the phone, this means answer YES to the official carrier question, or uncheck "Activate phone" in expert mode.

Yes this will work with new bootrom 3GS models. The only reason older releases didn't work with spirit JB'd phones was that spirit didn't exploit the bootrom at all. This JB uses a new bootrom exploit so you're in the clear, JB away!

It's been announced that the unlock won't come out until after 4.2, so stop acting entitled and be patient. Pwnagetool allows you to keep your current unlock on 4.1 (whereas before only iPhone 4 users and old bootrom 3GS's could), so it's pretty important.

The AT&T contract question is independent of the unlock. Answer the contract question honestly as it deals with activation. If you use AT&T and check NO then you won't get any signal.

Tiny Umbrella is available on the big 3 OS's so you'll have no problem on OS X. As ElPipo said, pretty self explanatory.

In that case you can either wait for pwnagetool to be released of you can give sn0w breeze a shot (windows version of pwnage made by non-member of dev team)

He should be updating to 4.1 not 3.1.3. Even if he needs the unlock he can just use sn0w breeze to create a custom ipsw.

So long as you don't need your phone unlocked you should just upgrade to 4.1 and then use redsn0w 0.9.6b1. 4.1 is the only version of 4.x that is really usable on the 3G anyway.

You cannot downgrade basebands. Your only hope is to wait for the new unlock that *should* be released sometime after 4.2 is released in November.

I think you need to have your phone officially activated, not hacktivated, for facetime to work. 1. Find a friend with AT&T 2. Restore to 4.1 while preserving the baseband (yes again, needs to be a fresh install) 3. Don't restore from backup, set up as new phone 4. Put your friend's AT&T sim in the phone to activate it 5. Install ultrasn0w 6. Put your sim in 7. Try out facetime!

You should be using ultrasn0w, not blacksn0w. Limera1n is supposed to activate during JB, though I don't know if it's doing this successfully.
