You're certainly free not to read Nancy as asexual–heck, I don't either. The episode makes it pretty clear that she's celibate by choice and for religious reasons. It's really just Dean's attitude that bothers me. And yeah, it's just Dean being Dean, but that doesn't mean that the idea that sex is fulfilling and necessary shouldn't make me uncomfortable.

Just wanted to thank Mark for pointing out that asexual people exist. Dean’s one of those people who hasn’t even considered the possibility that someone might not want to have sex. That scene made me uncomfortable when I first watched it, which was before I even knew I was asexual. Aside from assuming virgin = pure, which is always gross, I like to think I wouldn’t be the first candidate for ritual sacrifice.

The last month of my quarter was too busy for me to comment, but now that my spring break’s hit, I spent the first five days catching up on Seasons 2 & 3. Which is great because I managed to arrive just in time for my favorite episode of the entire show: 3.11 Mystery Spot Whether I’m looking for humor or angst, I can turn to this episode. “Groundhog Day bullshit,” as Mark put it, is one of my favorite tropes. Even when it’s not done well, I adore it. But boy howdy, it is well done here. (pst my fave use of this trope is the DC comics Blue Beetle/Booster Gold fic, “Twas the Groundhog Day Before Christmas” by poisonivory) The cold open is so genius. Something’s a bit off about it; there are too many details. In any other episode you wouldn’t see an old man getting his keys, movers arguing over a piano, or a waitress dropping a bottle. It’s off-putting, but not threatening–until Dean gets blown away at the Mystery Spot. Visually, Dean dying in Sam’s arms is such a horrible, gut-wrenching role reversal from “All Hell Breaks Loose: Part One,” in both Dean’s cold open death and his Wednesday death. Even though Dean’s deaths are telegraphed, I laugh at each one. You just know the piano’s going to fall on him, the dog’s going to attack him, the axe is going to slip. But the absurdity still gets me. The Trickster’s got imagination, I’ll give him that. Of course, this is whole thing about Sam. We can’t have an SPN ep without Winchester angst. Jared Padalecki has some great expressions in this one. He goes from pure horror to tense panic to resigned disgruntlement, and then, when Wednesday hits, to cold determination. With Dean’s impending death looming over the season, this is the furthest thing from okay. Which is, of course, why it’s happening. It is fascinating that this is outside the Trickster’s M.O. He’s not serving up Sam’s “just desserts”– instead, he wants to show him that his search for a way out of the deal is futile. He even tips him off with the strawberry syrup. It seems like he’s trying to help Sam, in his own twisted way, trying to break him of his desperate desire to save Dean. Spoilers for early S4: LZZI ba ubj fhpprffshy ur vf. Everything after Wednesday hurts so much. Take all the hints about Sam’s darkness in the past few eps, and dial it up to eleven. I can’t tell if he was really willing to kill an innocent man, or if he was bluffing Trickster!Bobby, but I’m kind of leaning towards the former. At this point, he’s entirely fueled by One of my (least) favorite parts of the “Wednesday sequence” is when he digs the bullet out of his abdomen and sews himself up. You can bet that Dean does that for him all the time, that they patch each other up after hunts. But now he’s learned how to do it himself without showing a single sign of pain. Other Tidbits Now whenever I see bumper stickers for the Santa Cruz Mystery Spot I think of this episode. Other things this ep has ruined: “Heat of the Moment” by Asia, pig ’n a pokes, strawberry syrup, Tuesdays. Speaking of: pig ‘n a poke! If you ever wanted to see Jensen Ackles poking a pig <img src="http://25.media.tumblr.com/2aa63be3dae79449b5b1147db1626f19/tumblr_mzdm2ccB581skqac2o2_400.gif"> your wish <img src="http://31.media.tumblr.com/9a5c467550da9bbbaaa20ae72d1f6dab/tumblr_mzdm2ccB581skqac2o3_400.gif"> is granted. (x possible casting spoilers at the source) Hey, Dean, can you not with the “dingoes-ate-my-baby cr••y.” A dingo really did kill her baby, and that whole case was icky and misogynistic/ableist. 100 Tuesdays and six months beginning with Wednesday is a lot of time. That’s over nine months that Sam lived and still remembers. Yeah, that’s not traumatizing at all. A fansong for this episode to the tune of Rebecca Black’s “Friday.” (warning for some ableist language)
