Macleans.ca : The untold story of the 2011 election: Introduction and Chapter 1

It's important to note that during the time that Dion was leader the media portrayed Michael Ignatieff (rightly or wrongly) at the best of times as not entirely supportive of his leader and at the worst of times a schemer. I recall seeing footage of Ignatieff smirking while Dion was underperforming during question period. Ignatieff (and Rae for that matter) also kept his leadership campaign team intact so that it seemed like he was just preparing for Dion to fail so he could take over.

It's interesting how Elections Canada is going out of its way to make sure that Liberal and NDP voters on university campuses are accomodated but that Conservative voters in senior homes are disenfranchised. This bias is quite troubling.

Macleans.ca : A price must be paid—but by whom?

Andrew, I'm surprise to see you advocating voting for a party over an MP. But I'm pretty sure that deep down you are voting for the MP over the party since you live in Rosedale your choice is between voting for a no-name Conservative or voting for Bob Rae (a pretty respectable statesmen that you have showered praise on many occasions). So it's obvious why you are voting Liberal... but your column was pretty good nonetheless.

Macleans.ca : Stephen Harper is winning (UPDATED with late-breaking uncertainty)

Totally agree with you on the residual affects of the NDP government in Ontario. If I want to get a sense of what "average" Canadian voters think I test run them by my parents (who live in Ontario) and my in-laws (who live in Quebec City). My mom is still bitter about the Rae Days 15+ years later and will never vote NDP (provincially or federally again). The notion of a liberal-"socialist" government is frightening to her, and she thinks that the 2008 coalition was "illegal". I tried to explain the nuances to her and she was having none of it. She also can't stand Michael Ignatieff nor can she pronounce his name. My in-laws on the other hand are very excited about the NDP surge in Quebec, even though they are probably more conservative in nature, they really like Jack Layton and they like the idea of having a "new" party to support.

Macleans.ca : The Rorschach test of CCSVI research

I don't think there is any evidence to support that the procedure would lead to long term cost savings, but if you can direct me to them, I would be happy to take a look. Ontario does not cover treatment that is generally accepted in Ontario as experimental, for research or a survey, including clinical and drug trials and if they did, they would not be able to do it on a disease by disease, or case by case basis without being susceptible to challenges under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Really? Then why doesn't the Ontario government cover it since OHIP covers all medically necessary services provided by physicians as long as they are not generally accepted in Ontario as experimental, for research or a survey, including clinical and drug trials. Oh I know... it's because there is not one single physician in Canada who does not consider the procedure experimental. There may be physicians who support it but no physician will say that there is sufficient evidence that it is safe and effective.

Do you feel badly for people with other diseases who can't afford experimental treatments? Do you think that provincial health insurance plans should cover all experimental treatments?

Macleans.ca : Stephen Harper and the Canada Health Act

My understanding is that the Canada Health Act deters (rather than prohibits) provinces from allowing payment from sources other than goverment for medically necessary services. If a province does not comply with the CHA, the federal government can reduce the amount of money it transfers to the province for healthcare. Ontario and most (if not all) provinces have their own legislation designating medically necessary services as publically insured and making it illegal for people to pay for insured services. If the CHA were scrapped, each province would have to decide if they would want to change their legislation to allow for a patient payer system. It is also important to note that there is nothing in the CHA or provincial legislation that broadly prohibits private, for profit healthcare. Indeed physicians' practices (e.g. your family doctor's office) are private, for-profit corporations. In Ontario, the Independent Health Facilities Act and the Private Hospitals Act allow for a limited range of private facilities to offer publicy funded hospital-type services.
