Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : What do you do for a living?

<a href="http://www.greaterlansingfoodbank.org" target="_blank">www.greaterlansingfoodbank.org <a href="http://www.flickr.com/thegardenproject" target="_blank">www.flickr.com/thegardenproject (although it hasn't been updated this year... soon!) Our gardening program has really evolved over the past 4 years! Our program has been active since 1983, with the intention of helping folks grow their own food (teach them to fish...). A garden would be started in a public space and we'd hand out seeds/plants, provide tools, classes, etc. That model appears 'one size fits all', but it's not really effective ~different folks garden for different reasons. So, we started training organizations (churches, pantries, schools, etc) to facilitate the type of garden that would work best for them. Not so much 'how-to garden' but ways to establish partnerships and become a sustainable asset to their community. For our gleaning program, we're very lucky to have Michigan State University right next to us, so we get quite a bit of produce (90%) from their research farms & orchards. We also have done outreach to local area farmers, farmers markets, etc. to get donations. The limitations really come at the pantry level, most have NO refrigerated storage space plus are usually staffed by volunteers with limited hours. We send out our produce the day that its picked, but pantries aren't always open when produce is available, so it can be a bit of a juggling game. Feel free to contact me if you'd like some more info: kyle@greaterlansingfoodbank.org :^)

I'm the office coordinator for the community gardening and gleaning program of our local food bank. We have gone from 32 to over 80 gardens in the past 2 years with many of the new gardens established at churches as food pantry plots. Our gleaning program also harvested over 340,000 lbs. of fresh, local produce for our food pantries in 2009.

Pssst... This Quaker's sitting here in a black t-shirt and linen pants. Got 'em at Target; that's where they're selling the Quaker garb now. ;^) Oh, and AMEN on all the posts for accountability and self-control! It's difficult, but hey, what worthy life isn't? The Bible never said the Path would be smooth or easy. I will add that it continually frustrates me when men talk about how women just 'don't understand' how difficult the male sex drive is to reign in! Uh, hello? Like women aren't sexual beings? Not visually oriented? Please. This separate definition of sexuality is what gives the room for excuses to grow. Temptation hits women, too (like a ton of bricks...); it's up to both genders to look at their weaknesses and to reflect honestly on what the root cause is and place appropriate boundaries to protect their relationships.

I absolutely LOVE these posts, I find so many books to read. Not all of them are a fit, but they get me to think 'how, what & why', and those that do spark my Soul are great. I also read a lot of non-faith non-fiction, but I enjoy finding the Divine in the secular. I really liked 'If God is Love', by Phillip Gulley. Right now I'm reading 'Silence and Witness' by Michael Birkel. I've read quite a bit of Quaker theology books and others such as 'Witness to War' by Charles Clements, which are written by Quakers. I read 'Crazy Love' by Francis Chan, but it didn't grab me; the message really resonated with me, but his writing style wasn't for me. Then again, I loved 'Velvet Elvis', although didn't think Rob Bell's other books were the same quality.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Secretly being liberal.

I'm just curious; If all the Conservative folks got all their tax money back from the government, would you spend it all on charity? This 'Progressive Traditionalist Quaker' works for our local food bank, which receives Federal Funds and has the majority of its pantries at churches. It seems that in all the rhetoric about where/how 'our' money is spend, we've forgotten that those working with you tax dollars are PEOPLE, not just some nameless, faceless bureaucracy. We are people who care, just as you do. People who volunteer their time & effort. People who represent many facets of Faith and those who represent none at all. We all mean well and try to do the best we can, fallen humanity notwithstanding. 'We the People' is a Government by, of and FOR the People. We are not the enemy, we are here to work Together with communities of Faith to help heal those in need.
