It can drive readers nuts. I know it drives me mad when I get into something only to realize it's not complete and the last update was months ago. It would be hard for some writers to prove they can finish as well. Some folks outline their stories to a large degree and know what will happen when and where, like a family planning a car trip across the states. Others kind of go off a general plan in their heads and just roll down the road. I'm one of those writers, and so it is really hard for me to say/plan what is going to happen at the end of my own stories.
