Even though she's British, at least part of her childhood was spent in Nazi-occupied Europe. And in any case, she also did humanitarian work because she really cared - and had class. Could you even imagine in a million years her saying snarky things about other people not caring as much as she did, the way that, say, George Clooney ("no one has been as enlightened as we are in hollywood!") would?

Granted, not all activists in Hollywood are/were the coddled kiddies - Katherine Hepburn is a good example. But it's the coddled kiddies like Gwyneth Paltrow who simply can't understand why *anyone* would not be willing to spend thousands of dollars for high-end "green" products, or "fair trade" products, or "vegan" products, etc etc etc and so these nose-in-the-air airheads stand out as the most obnoxious. For seriously off the deep end, we could bring up the Fonda kids. (ok, they haven't been, biologically, at least, kids, for a while)

He Got Bin Laden!!" Watch for gushing of "Obama's Great Victory" on MSNBC. And months of "He did what Bush couldn't" snarking. Obama raced to take credit for the death of Bin Laden with all the singleminded determination that our dog Ginger had when racing to the tidbit of food under the dinner table.

About twenty five people, if I counted right - some came trickling in as the previews started, and a few more showed up after that. I was really worried, at first - I showed up almost an hour early, thinking there would be a crowd, but for a while I was the only one in the theatre - then about twenty minutes before showtime, more people showed up. I'm really hoping that the evening showings will have a much bigger turnout! There is, so far (unless more theatres have been added to the list) only the one place in Annapolis, MD showing this movie.

Part 2 of 2: It's well-written; yes, a few lines here and there were a bit clunky, and one or two characters - mostly the antagonists of the movie - did get didactic at times, but that was part of who those rotters were, and the movie *showed* us the story; it didn't *preach* the story. The acting was well done, the story was perfectly paced, the cinematography was excellent - the first run of the John Galt line was a thing of beauty; I heard "oooooh"s around me in the theatre - and I'm getting the soundtrack as soon as i can. It is true to the book, but you don't have to have read the book to really enjoy it. And it is sooo easy to get swept up into the optimism and joy when it looks like the heroes are going to win through, even if you have read the book. Totally See. This. Movie! Drag people along. Yes, all that Mr. Calle said of the movie is true, and then some.

Part 1 of 2: I saw the second showing of the day, and for the first time in a VERY long time, I came out of the theatre wanting to tell everyone I meet "SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!" Not just because it's a "Tea Party Movie," although philosophically it is; not because it artfully yet ruthlessly pounds on Progressive Pieties, although it does - see it because it REALLY is a GREAT MOVIE, as JustaDame said.

Mr. Redford's tireless hyping of The Conspirator for its "parallels" to The Evil Bush also seriously detracts from that movie's potential appeal. If nothing else, Redford really should just shut up and let the movie speak for itself, or let the audience make their own conclusions --- oh, wait, I forgot; Redford, as part of the Hollywood Elite, probably thinks the audience is too stupid to understand the intellectual subtleties of his Great Artistic Work.

Gene Hackman was so totally awesome in "Narrow Margin"!!! He totally made that movie - especially in the scenes where he explained to a couple of the villains why he feels compelled, as a district attorney, to bring down criminals, or discussing the situation with the fleeing murder-witness who he's trying to protect so she can testify against the crime boss who had her blind date murdered. It was also impressive that he was able to present his character as a crusading man of the people without being the *slightest* bit preachy. And then there were all the exciting chase scenes and fight scenes, and that best of all of his lines of the movie: "You know what I like about you? You're tall!" He has been awesome overall, but I hadn't seen "Narrow Margin" mentioned yet. (also OT: I also saw the ad for the "Arthur" remake. I was caught between shock and nausea. Oh, hey, if it hasn't been done - though if it has and I missed it, please forgive the "old" idea - how about a top ten of the worst remakes ever?)

Ookay... From my (long) list of dumb ideas--- Every so often I've been tempted to suggest that some people dress up like clowns (red noses, wigs, orange and green hair, big bow ties, the whole nine yards), and stand around the WBC goons with signs like "We're With Stupid" and "God Likes Pie" and similar total nonsense. (But I don't want to add to the disrespect of the funeral, so...) Then I've thought, hey, why not stage some kind of "big event" like a "celebrity" (fake or real, doesn't matter), with oodles of "fans" and "news people" (again, fake or real, doesn't matter), Right In Front Of the Westboro Baptist Fools, while making a Huge Point of Ignoring them. Or hire a huge marching band, or gospel choir, to stand in front of them. Eh, probably bad ideas, but a girl can dream!!!

I put humor in quotation marks as "humor" - should have elaborated: What they are calling "humor" is, as you pointed out, nothing but hateful insults. Somewhere along the line they lost sight of the fact that Real Humor Is Not a Weapon. But their "humor" is nothing *but* - snarkiness to hurt people they don't like.
