The thing I always told people that I really liked about B5 was the ongoing story and character development and almost complete lack of 'fluffy' and neat "We win because we are the good guys" episode wrap-ups . Unlike most other SF shows, the characters grew and changed as events changed them and the universe they were part of. It was full of long term plots and consequences unlike say S.T. where, as you said, things just reset after each story. I suspect this was the only way the DS9 writers were able to convince the franchise to allow the growing darker and longer plot stories they developed later in the series (although there was talk of DS9 being partially steered by their studio's prior (late 80s) access to the proposed B5 main storyline) It also allowed shows like Farscape to get off the ground in an industry where SF is treated as a 'soft serve' most of the time. We basically proved that as the house cooled in the night the battery voltage dropped minutely (millivolts), just enough to trigger the low batt chirp. The act of chirping caused the electronic components to raise their internal resistance minutely and the chirp detect voltage would move down just a smidge so the chirp would stop. Cycles of this would occur and then, as the house warmed and air currents moved with people getting up, the battery voltage would rise again just enough to stop the chirp cycle. It took months to prove in the lab and ultimately proved that the randomness of temperatures and air currents in the home caused the whole thing to be freakily erratic. Yes, we were complete Science Geeks long before it was even vaguely socially acceptable! ;-) For the sake of my sanity nowadays I simply use generic alkalines and replace them every 12 months when I turn my clocks backward for Daylight Savings. Many will stabilise as they get older (Vincent, Ursula, Roddy) and life shapes them a bit more or if influences change (Jacob(Bud, Autumn, Tiff), Kaitlyn (On Cue Ball)).
