RTE Sport : RTÉ Rugby - World Cup 2011 Ireland\'s World Cup dream ended by Wales

Congrats to Wales but it seemed like a typical Irish Performance..."Aaahhh didnt we do well to get this far, lets stop playing and look forward to a parade". I sure wish Irish sport teams would realize they have a right to something more. Its ok to be selfish and want to win a tournament.

Fingers crossed for this update. If the software actually opens up on my Focus, its an improvement. I think that messenger app was the worst app I have used so far on WP7.

All in all some very exciting news for WP7 fans. WP7 is maturing exactly the way I hoped when I made the plunge to get a WP7 phone. I do wish the updates would arrive a little sooner. Anyhow, Microsoft will end 2011 having pulled technically level (and ahead on some fronts) with Android and iOS. Smart move Nokia.

WMPoweruser.com : Nokia's road to Redmond

Edwards hatred for Microsoft is second only to his hate for Nokia. I'm not sure what the point in asking Edward to write an article on this topic is...I mean its like asking Kim Jong IL to write an article on the US...there was only one inevitable conclusion.

WMPoweruser.com : Windows Phone 7 update in “probably early March” says Samsung rep

We'll find out more next week at MWC . My only hope is that Microsoft were preparing two updates and decided that the second update was so close to being ready that they delayed the first one so they could deploy both together as one larger update. I'm a dreamer I guess. Regardless of who set the expectation, Microsoft are going to take some hits in the tech press on this one.

WMPoweruser.com : Windows Phone 7 off to a slow start in USA, being outsold by Windows Mobile

My WP7 phone is a Samsung Focus and I really like it but that phone is just an extension of Samsung Galaxy line which was lanuched in June 2010. Even at that the Samsung Focus had the weaker snapdragon processor and not hummingbird that the other Galaxy phones have. The Dell Venue Pro was unique but Dell hasn't delivered on it yet. A phone with a slide-out speaker...say no more. HD7 is basically the HD2 a year later with a different label on it. Which WP7 phone made you go wow? and why?

I own a WP7 phone but the sales are relatively disappointing so far. I can't imagine its inline with Microsoft's expectations. Good point on no CDMA. In the US we have the full zune and bing experience so sales don’t seem to be affected either way by it but I can imagine it being a deterrent in other countries.

I really like my WP7 phone but there is definitely room for improvement. It’s only been on the market 3 months and regardless of its sales number, there is no way Microsoft is leaving this market even if it takes another 2 years to get it right. Anyhow, I think there are a number of reasons for Microsoft’s poor sales: 1) Hardware Manufacturers really let Microsoft down. There isn’t one cutting edge phone out there. 2) Microsoft’s image. If people can’t distinguish between Windows Mobile and Windows Phone, Microsoft is in trouble. A new name may help. 3) Poor marketing. Think of the droid commercials for Verizon and what a success those were. 4) Kin. Besides the PR disaster for Microsoft, It also sucked up valuable engineer resources from WP7 that would have allowed WP7 to more complete on release day. 5) Lack of updates. There should be an update every single month in my opinion. 6) How about some exclusive xbox franchise game tie-ins for WP7?

Either way I suspect the cost advantage for Android will be gone soon. Which means WP7 and Android will be on a level playing field in terms of costs leaving features and ease of use as the differentiating factor which I think Microsoft can win.

I think handset manufactures are starting to realize they are in trouble with Android. Check out engdagets article just posted about the obvious copying of code: http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/21/oops-android-c...

WMPoweruser.com : iPhone vs. WP7 Update Frequency Explained

I can understand that CDMA is important for a lot of people but for all us existing WP7 owners it doesnt make any difference to us. What will the update add for us early adopters? When I install the update and all I get is copynpaste and some performance improvements I will be disappointed.

WMPoweruser.com : iPhone vs. WP7 Update Frequency Explained

I see both sides of the argument here. However, I think I will reserve judgement and see what this first update contains. If it is simply copynpaste and some performance improvements that I will be disappointed. Microsoft need to deliver something that grabs some attention in the tech world. Also, WP7 went gold at the end of Augst so Microsoft has had 5 months to work on this update so I'm expecting some substance to this update. Not sure when iOS first went gold relative to the first iOS update?

WMPoweruser.com : Intel wants Windows 8 phones running x86

You are right Saad073 that is the future. Microsoft know it too. The question is whether they will be ready by next year with it. Ballmer did say a few months ago that the next version of windows will be their riskest ever so maybe they are going all out. http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/23/ballmer-next-r...

Ultimately, I think it’s obvious that Microsoft is going under a huge strategic shift here with the goal of Windows everywhere. Windows 8+ will power all phones, tablets, TV’s and PCs. I actually think it’s a smart strategy. That doesn’t mean one universal UI but an OS who's UI will mutate based on the form factor its on. I’m starting to wonder if Windows 8 will be the first commercial version of Midori, Microsoft’s singularity OS with legacy support provided by some hypervisor layer.

WMPoweruser.com : Microsoft brings Full Windows to ARM chipsets, somewhat missing the point

I think the more interesting question is what this means for Windows Phone. Reading the blog on istartedsomething made it sound like Sinofsky dodged the question I wonder if the next version of windows will have some sort of mutating UI based on the form factor its running on. "One good question was that whether or not this new version of Windows which supports ARM will also power the next version of Windows Phone. Sinofsky dodged the question." http://www.istartedsomething.com/20110106/liveblo...

WMPoweruser.com : The naysayers are off to the races as Microsoft releases Windows Phone 7 sales figures

To me personally the numbers aren't too bad and Does it even matter at this point? Microsoft are not going to cede this market to Google and Apple not now not ever. I have a Samsung focus and everyone I show it to loves it. The typical reaction I get is "I cant believe thats a Microsoft product" which may say a little about the uphill battle Microsoft has in winnng people over. To give a honest assessment on the whole WP7 launch, I think the hardware partners are the ones that probably disappointed me more than anything. The showed no innovation with the WP7 phones....HTC a phone with a slide-out speaker...really? Hopefully, 2011 will bring some cooler WP7 phones. At the end of 2011, we'll have a better idea of how WP7 is doing.
