Your piece was amazing, Renee. And that pushback was just...well, I think it did more to make your point than I could have envisioned. It was sad to see so many ignorant comments from so many people who refused to get it while no one took Latoya's points to heart. I have your back love. You speak the truth there, hon. I know all too well that there is no room for some (after all, I know the sting of Cecilia's words, I am an invisible body in the world as well). This week I wrote about feeling left out of discussions on race, being constantly told which one I belong to, or finding the conversation forced one way or another, leaving bodies like mine left out in Wopajo. I also wrote about how we don't take the words of people we deem "crazy" seriously, in The Importance of Being Bellatrix Lestrange. Also, congrats on The Guardian piece! I thought to myself, "Self, how will I ever weigh in on this Canukistanian V. US-ian Bacon throwdown?"...even Spam can not inspire me to choose a side, being the breakfast meat of choice more often than not (it is cheaper than both bacons, and fries up all tasty -- sue me, we lived in Hawai'i for years!). Well, Self and The Guy teamed up to solve this one... Samgyeopsal. For breakfast, lunch or dinner, wrapped in lettuce, eaten alone, with whole cloves of garlic or not, grilled on the table in front of you, with kimchi or without, tasty as anything. OM NOM NOM! Seriously, peeps. Visit South Korea, and all of this "Canada!" "U.S.A.!" crap will be put to rest on most issues. I swear it is true.

This was my class song when I graduated (oy! I just dated myself!), but it also has the emotional trigger of reminding me of the friend who committed suicide that same year in front of our school. It is difficult for me to separate those two things, really. I love this song, but it brings up such a mashing of emotions. Thanks for posting.

OMCC Renee that part gets me every time as well, too! LOL! I don't know, I like too many movies... I just saw Highlander for the first time, so I have "There can only be ONE" in my head... Men in Tights had so many good ones. "A Jew? Here", or "Did you say 'Abe Lincoln'?". Heh. I am sure there are more, but I watch so many bad movies that I could fill up a good amount of space doing it...but I think you win, Renee.

The only figurine I have of a Santa Clause is this adorable candle holder that is a black Santa. I don't really like Christmas decor, but for some reason he was endearing to me. This makes no point really... Anyhow...I remember once at a party a woman was talking about trying to find someone to dress up as Santa for the kids as the daycares (an active duty person), and that she had a couple of voluteers, but they were all black and that she thought it was just too confusing to the kids to have a black Santa. I asked her why, and she gave me some tired line about Santa just always being white. I told her that didn't make any sense and removed myself from the party shortly after. I am not that desperate to make friends.

It is not about subservience. In most of Asia, it is about respect. Bowing is the equivalent of hand shaking here. Oy! I mean seriously, the people that are so up in arms over this have not one modicum of sense of culture outside of their own. In Japan and Korea, when you meet someone, you bow, and sometimes if you are a Westerner, they will shake hands w/ you too (even though it isn't their custom). A deep bow shows deep respect, not subservience. Where do these people learn this crap? This comes from an insistence that the US is the center of the world and the most important nation evah! He's polite. And when he comes to Korea, I expect he will do the same damned thing.

"Broken Wings" by Mister Mister is one of my first memories. I think it is the first song I remember knowing the words to. I remember playing w/ my toys on the kitchen floor seeing my mother "walk like an Egyptian". "Edge of Seventeen" is one of my favorite songs to this day.

Nope...not a new thing at all. I smuggled half of it away the first time she went into the "junk drawer" (you all have one!) and it became Mommy's place of peace. Where I went when I needed a quick fix. Now we have a better scam and we get The Kid to go along with it (my friend Elizabeth AKA The Red Queen came up w/ this beauty) where we allow her to either keep it or trade it to us for something she wants (like a video game). This year it was going to be the remainder of the DS she has been saving for. She managed to get the Flu though, so there was no Trick or Treating to be had. Boo.

You assume seem to be saying that women are incapable of giving consent in these situations. All the time. Full stop. That kind of universal is flawed logic, plain and simple. Either you think women are full humans capable of making informed decisions, or you don't. You made your point loud and clear here. So, again, we ask. Have you ever talked to any actual women in the porn industry? Read blogs by them (like Renegade Evolution, for example? That's a great place to start, and I dare you to tell her she is raped every time she works)?

If I missed where someone here said "well, "grey rape" is a great term", please point it out, b/c I clearly missed it. You are minimizing the word by blanketing something and trying to blur a line by equating something you personally do not like w/ something that is abhorrent. You are erasing the experiences of real women and saying that they were raped whether they say they consented or not...and that is a serious problem. You are saying that a woman is incapable of giving consent in this situation, and that is erasing her agency. I have a huge problem with that. You can not equate porn with rape all the time. In one instance a person exerts their agency to do a job they want to do, in the other it is torn away from them brutally. you are trying to equate the two and that makes you wrong.

Sorry, but starting an argument w/ a great big blanket statement like that does nothing for your cause. It's condescending and paternalistic, and also erases the experiences of actual women, who you claim to be arguing for, BTW? Remember them? The actual women to do this actual work? Yeah, some of them actually like it, and would probably take some offense to you implying that they are too weak or whatever to give consent to something they enjoy, or that they consider a good way to make a living. Have you, the author, bothered, ever to talk to an actual human being who works in the porn industry? Instead of just ranting off on a condescending diatribe why don't you try talking to actual women instead of silencing and dismissing them with your assumptions about their lives and experiences? It's incredibly insulting and entirely flawed. Not to mention minimizing of actual rape to just compare porn to rape when already have trouble getting actual rape taken seriously. Aren't we, as feminists, supposed to be supportive of allowing women to name their own experiences as they see fit and not force them into molds they might not identify with, which might re-victimize them all over again? You are doing more harm than good here. I suggest you lay off the universals and spend some time reading the blogs of actual sex workers and women in the porn industry.

No, really, thank you. Because some days, I really start to believe that it doesn't matter what I say, or how much I do. I really start to think that it doesn't matter, that it will never do any good because I am just one voice that no one hears.
