Big Hollywood : 'To Kill a Mockingbird' Blu-ray Review: That Most American of Movies Arrives in High-Definition

I have never read the book. Someone here in this form has already called both the film and the book "Liberal Porn". In order for Lawyer Finch to be the hero, Tom has to die. In order for Ms. Lee / the film to have the outcome that makes Liberals "Feel Good" they have to find Tom guilty. Anything that destroys a minority Liberals love.

I posted the following on the TCM web site 3 years ago: From time to time, TCM runs the feature, "How to read a movie". In it, they talk about how a film is made and how you can "read" a film like a book. Inthis post, I want to talk about an aspect of this film that isn't spoken of, the trial of Tom Robinson. Tom,accused of sexual assault on the "White Trash" Mayella, is defended by the noble Atticus Finch. Lawyer Finch does a masterful job of defending his client by showing in court that due to an accident to his left arm, Tom couldn't have attacked Mayella. And then Atticus departs from the facts and starts to talk about the reason for this case is because Mayella "Tempted a Negro". I contend that in his summation, Atticus Finch helped convict his client. Finch, did not keep the juries attention on the Facts! By appealing to their emotions, he made them come to the defense of a "white woman attacked by a N*****". at that point, Tom may as well have bolted from the courtroom and started his last desperate run for freedom. Finch helped convict his client. If you accept my opinion, Maybe Atucus Finch isn't the hero we thought of. I await your Opinions and comments.

Dear Mr. Avrech, I have missed your illumination comments on "Big Hollywood" for a while. Thanks for your talk about women's hats. A wonderful frame for a woman's face. PS: I never noticed Norma Shearer legs, I am too captivated by her face. (I like thick legs too)

The Mann / DiNero line., "Have nothing in you life that you can't walk out on in 30 seconds flat......" has been my watch words as far as employment is concerned. In my life, I have worked for some truly awful people. They try to play mind games instead of getting the job done. Always be ready to walk! even if there isn't and other job waiting for you. Tough it out, Be a man and walk! G*D I love this film!

Big Hollywood : Modern Hollywood’s Love Affair With Satanism

I gave up such films after seeing "The Devil's Advocate" back in '97. At the end of the film, My question was. "Where was G*d ?" It seems that we must believe in supernatural Evil, and we as mere mortals are powerless to do anything about it. The same thing happened in the last episode of "Star Trek Deep Space 9", Our hero saves the day (barely) But, without the help of the good supernatural beings that have guided his fate from the start of the series. It isn't "Cool" to be good in either TV or the movies these days

When I visited "Historic Mt. Vernon", at the grave of the "Father of Our Country", A flock of teen agers came along . They were loud , and silly and being disrespectful kids at a grave site. As I was about to ask them to show some respect, I noticed that one of them had on a "Che" T-shirt. It took a great deal of will to stop myself from kicking his sorry but into the Potomac. I'm glad that I learned "Fire Discipline"

I have to speak up for Alan Rickman. The story goes that through out the filming, 20th Century -Fox Executives tried to get him fired of the picture. Joel Silver stood by him and Rickman turned in outstanding performance. Rickman is a "Lefty Lib" But, I will give him credit for being an good actor! (Sorry I missed him in "Dangerous Liaisons" on Broadway)

Is it me? Or did Robert Walker play Bruno Gay? As I remember the film, Bruno seemed to take out his anger on women (except his mother) and he really played up to Guy (Farley Granger). Maybe Bruno thought that once Guy Ex wife was out of the way, he and Guy would find a place just off DuPont Circle and lead the Gay Pride Parade. Or, maybe Walker did what Hitchcock told him to do.

"High Noon" is a western for people who HATE westerns. I agree with Ms. Carolyn, "Rio Bravo" had folks (note : innkeeper Carlos and his wife) who wanted to fight for their town. in the remake "El Dorado " I like the part where Robert Mitchun smacks Ed Asner (the bad guy) across the face with his rifle. (I so want to do that with Liberal / Progressives sometimes) Give "High Noon" a pass. See a REAL Western.

Sorry LB, Both films (The Deer Hunter and Heaven's gate) are examples of a Director without control. Mr. Cimino was given the the keys to the vault and then he ran amuck. I think what makes a great film is the obstacles you have to overcome to make your film. In the case of the "Deer Hunter", I found the film to be big and loud. That is great for oscar voters, but I like a coherent story. As for "Heaven's Gate" I saw in in the theaters. It was pointless with no story. Just a lot of pictures strung together.

This film is GREAT! A"Party Girl" and a FBI agent take on a Nazi Momma's Boy and his cohorts. I have watched this film several times and I always feel the hurt that Bergman has at the horse race. I feel the anger that Rains feels in the wine cellar. This is why America films were the best. It has it all!

I will admit that I didn't bother seeing the film. It came out asa spate of films looking for "Oscars". The films were loud and generally boring. That same year,"Atonement" came out. That too was long and utterly pointless. Films at one time were made to entertain people. Not to put them to sleep!
