I don't think I am a fatalist, rather a realist. These measures might be have been implemented last spring and might have been successful, at least in the short to medium term. However, with the current level of infections in the UK it is impossible to achieve zero covid. The imported cases' contribution to the overall infection rates is negligible compared to the spread within the UK.
And even if it can be done, what next? Keeping the borders tightly closed for how long?

By the end of April (optimistically) the over 50s and the vulnerable might have their first vaccine dose. Add to this 12 weeks and see when they will be fully vaccinated.

Those, who are arguing for a longer lockdown and a slow gradual removal of the restrictions are concerned for the economy as well. They just don't think that the yo-yo effects of lockdowns followed by 'eat out to help out" initiatives are good for the wider economy.

Sounds good, but it's not possible.

Haha... the old "red under the bed" phenomenon. Everything can be explained with "communists and Labour activists".

What the current numbers of hospital admissions and deaths would have been had the current lockdown not been imposed?

"The delay in the 2nd jab has shown to be effective in stopping serious covid as in the trials."
There is data supporting the delay only for Astra Zeneca vaccine. There is no data whatsoever about delaying the second jab beyond 3/4 weeks for Pfizer/ Moderna vaccines and the government has taken a huge gamble there.
