Sorry that you had to go through that kind of harassment - and I'm glad you figured out ways to deal with it. I'll bet these 'gays are wrong for scouts' folks won't hardly acknowledge the fact that the straight leaders are far more likely to commit that kind of crime (yes folks, that kind of harassment IS a crime) than a gay person.

the fact that this is all you do won't affect the fools who couldn't figure out that you would be reasonable and age appropriate when you chose to not buy from them. Notice how none of them have said 'oops - I didn't mean to accuse you of being a horrible person' now that you've made them aware that you wouldn't do something like that?

You and I disagree on the issue. And stop trying to crucify someone because you don't agree with them. I see grey areas where the absolutes you insist on don't work in the real world. You don't see how an artificial requirement that 'everything is the same no matter what' doesn't work in the real world. There is integrity in evaluating each individual situation for it's merit and making the decision on the merits of the individual situation instead of applying a 'one size fits all' solution. We disagree. I'm done.

Sorry - you're bringing all kinds of things into this discussion that have nothing to do with it. Gays in Scouts - or rather Gays not in scouts. That's the issue. Bringing up anything else and calling it related is a non sequitur. Yeah - there's unfairness all over the place - doesn't mean that it's related just because it's unfair to someone somewhere. We could go off on a thousand tangents of 'it's unfair, so it's related' or we can stick to the subject of gays in or out of scouts.

well, you were the one that incorrectly said that I was comparing girls to animals, cars, etc. when I wasn't. What do you expect when you do that? to be applauded? My arguement didn't fall flat - you insist that girls not being allowed into boy scouts is somehow relevant to a discussion on whether gays should be allowed in scouts. I don't beleive that it's relevant. I'm done.

No more so than your 'absolutism' does. (absolutism = demanding that ALL cases of anything must be absolutely equal, even when they are unrelated to the issue being discussed and regardless of the different subject matter, details and facts of each of the 'other things that have to be equal so that I can knock the other person's stand on something). affirmative action is 100% unrelated to the issue of gays in boy scouts. Let's get back on subject.

First of all, other organizations are not relevant to the situation with the boy scouts. Let's not get off subject here. However, Legally (whether you or I agree with this or not) if an organization has been known to be institutionally discrimantory, they can be forced to no longer be that way, and to put into place rules that require that they make up for that discrimination until the scales are balanced. Let's not get off subject into a dicussion about other issues, ok?

are you here to debate honestly or just prattle on with trolling arguements? I'm no more comparing cars, llamas, martians and pets to girls than you appear to be trying to have a serious and rational debate. I used an extension of the example of 'exclusions' that you used that you called relevant to show how irrelevant the rules about girls are to this discussion. If you say that the exclusion of girls is relevant, then you have to say that anything else that is excluded is relevant. I listed a few of the other exclusions to illustrate the point.

what the heck does firearms have to do with gays in scouting? And there is a difference between the two. Guns in the hands of idiots or an out of control angry people (you can't tell by looking at the person who's carrying) are dangerous, even deadly. So you can understand how it makes people nervous/fearful. If you can't understand that - or have any empathy for those people, well, I can't help that. An angry Gay person around your kids is no more dangerous than a straight person around your kids.

I do know that they use public facilities in many places without the fees that other groups would. I'm not involved in scouting anymore (my kids are long past that age). And getting 'free or reduced fee' usage of any public place counts as getting public funding.

The problem comes when people either pick and choose from within the scriptures to find what they want to use to support thier own biases and issues or when one group decides that thier 'interpreted by mankind' version is the only one to be allowed and actively tries to prevent any other interpretation from being allowed in society.

Keeper - so you want to ignore the fact that MANY people in a position of power over this ignored it, hid it and all for the sake of the reputation of the football program and it's hero worship of Paterno? IT was nothing less than criminal conspiracy to bury this. Schools have recieved the death penalty for far lesser infractions of the rules. There's never been a larger failure of a university or a football program than this. To fail to step up and penalize them at a proper level to match the scale of the utter failure as compared to previous death penalties would be an utter failure of the NCAA's rules.

Paterno wasn't the only person of high rank that had the power to stop this. MANY people ignored it because they didn't want to damage the football program's reputation. And that went all the way to the top of the school's management. If ANY school has ever earned the death penalty for it's football program, this one has. You CANNOT ignore the safety of CHILDREN for years and years 'for the sake of the football program' and get away with it. Think about the times when the death penalty has been levied against university football programs. It doesn't happen often, but when it has - it's been for far, far lesser violations of the public trust AND THE LAW than this. The school routinely hid this so that they wouldn't tarnish thier reputation. There's nothing lower than the scum who will allow children to be abused for the sake of a reputation.

There are many people out there that think that allowing gays near children someone encourages them to be gay. I guess they think that thier kid will be infected via osmosis or something... They forget that most gays are just like most straights. They want what's best for thier kids and will only expose them to age and group appropriate issues and discussions. There's no way a gay scout leader is going to discuss 'gay sex' in front of kids anymore than a straight person is going to discuss 'straight sex' in from of the kids. It's not group appropriate. I really don't understand what the problem is - 'gay' isn't going to rub off on your child, nor is a 'gay' leader going to do dastardly things to your child. They are there for the same reason you are - to help raise kids in a positive and healthy way. Nothing more, nothing less. Anyone who assumes otherwise has some serious need for mental health assistance. I would not have any problems with my children being around properly vetted adults - straight or gay - with groups like the scouts or other similars. Why would I be that way? Because I realize that 'gay' is no more dangerous to my children than 'straight' is. It's my job to raise my kids so that they know what's right and wrong. I don't need people telling me that they need to keep 'gay' away from my kids because they're having bias and or bigotry problems against gays.

to say that it's very relevant is to say that ANY restriction is relevant to the issue. Ford cars can't become scouts. Llama's can't become scouts. Men from Mars can't become scout leaders. Your dog/cat/goldfish can't become a scout. Should we include those in your 'very relevant' discussion? The reason it's not relevant is simple. The Scouts didn't just say they can't get in and continue a standing tradtion of discrimination that is otherwise held to be illegal in any other group.

Gee - thanks for telling me something that I already knew. However, MANY so-called Christians that fit your description think that Mormons aren't Christian even though most Mormons consider themselves to be of the Christian faith (just of a different branch of it than most who call themselves Christian).
