Atheist Revolution : Atheism May Be An Insufficient Basis for Community

Rejection of the divine and the supernatural isn't always a solid foundation to build a community on; atheists are a many and varied bunch, and I've met several over the years I disagree entirely with, even actively dislike. My recent post And Then Everyone Was A Fascist: Why The British Anti-Islamisation Debate Needs To Drop The Term 'Fascism'

Atheist Revolution : Those Who Abandon Bigotry Only When It Affects Their Children

It's always struck me as fairly self-serving and borderline disingenuous, these people who are perfectly happy to say some horrific shit about people who they disapprove of right up until it affects someone they know. Don't get me wrong, I'm always happy to see people realise the error of their ways, but that doesn't change the fact that they've done and said some really noxious, nasty things, and they're going to have to work extremely fucking hard to make up for that. My recent post And Then Everyone Was A Fascist: Why The British Anti-Islamisation Debate Needs To Drop The Term 'Fascism'

Atheist Revolution : John Oliver\'s Comments About Sarah Palin Have Relevance to Atheist Community

If you're a fan of John Oliver, you should totally check out his podcast with Andy Zaltsman; The Bugle. Extremely funny, well put-together and always very relevant. Both those guys know how to phrase important messages hilariously.
Atheist Revolution : Will New Southern Baptist Leadership Improve Approach to Clergy Sex Abuse?

Somehow I doubt they will. Call me cynical, but trying to make this sort of people up their act in regards to child abuse scandals is like trying to lead a particularly irate donkey across a narrow bridge; you're only going to get it moving in the most slow and unwilling of manners, and you're liable to get kicked in the face for your trouble.

I know just enough about this whole internet thing to be aware that you need to be really fucking careful about the information you put up on it. And honestly, this whole controversy bollocks is just getting silly now. Nothing's ever going to be achieved if all the atheist movement does is batter heads with one another.
Atheist Revolution : The Emptiness of Atheism

The broadness of atheism can often be of great benefit; it exposes everyone to many different perspectives and views, which I've always thought is extremely good at preventing narrow-mindedness and insular thinking. Of course, it can also mean we all get really, really pissed off with each other at times as well. That's just how these things go, I suppose.
Atheist Revolution : Is the Secular Movement Hostile to Women?

Knock not the cookie-baking. That shit's theraputic. As big a fan as I am of rolling out the ire, I see where you're coming from with this. We are supposed to be vaguely in agreement about certain key issues, given that we're all commenting on an atheist blog, so you'd think we'd have the capacity to be vaguely fucking civil.
Atheist Revolution : Game of Thrones and Pascal\'s Wager

They sort of covered the split of opinion between Norweigans about their old gods and Christianity's solitary god in Valhalla Rising; it wasn't a great film, to be honest, but Mads Mikkelsen is awesome in it and there's some great fight scenes. As for the whole religious discussion in Game of Thrones, now I think about it the topic comes up quite a lot. It's actually pretty good at presenting many different sides of the argument; like the pirate Salladhor Saan, for example, with the line "I've been all over the world, my boy, and everywhere I go people tell me about the 'true gods', they all think they found the right one." But then there's the whole thing with R'hllor the Red God, who's priests and priestesses can do some weird, weird shit. ...dammit, now you're really giving me ideas. I think when I'm done with the 'Religious Themes in Video Games' series I'm going to have to do one on Game of Thrones. Awesome post, dude. I really hadn't thought of this before.
Atheist Revolution : A Humanist Couple in Colorado Springs

"Many religions now come before us with ingratiating smirks and outspread hands, like an unctuous merchant in a bazaar. They offer consolation and solidarity and uplift, competing as they do in a marketplace. But we have a right to remember how barbarically they behaved when they were strong and were making an offer that people could not refuse." - Christopher Hitchens My recent post Religious Themes in Video Games: Receiver

Man, humanists and freethinkers still get a hell of a lot of bile flung at them across the pond. Over here, people really don't give a shit anymore for the most part. Takes a lot of guts to stand up publically for what you believe in, especially when most folks are going to direct a lot of hatred at you for it. Kudos to them.

On the whole mythicist/historicist argument, I kind of have to side with Dawkins; the mythicists have a decent case for their side, but at the end of the day myths and legends very often have their origins in fact. There probably was someone who the stories of Christ are based. As to what sort of a person he was, what he believed, and whether he really thought he was the divine offspring of a monotheistic deity? It's kind of anyone's guess on that front. And at the end of the day, even if a Jewish religious leader called Christ did exist at some point, this doesn't prove jack shit about religion.
