Since Paris is such an ancient historical city Allen was able to go back in time to illustrate that every generation has it's golden age where people wish they could go to revel in what their imagination tells them is there. Some of his historical characters even wish they could be transported to other times. He comes to the realization that instead of wishing for the past it might be better to embrace the present.
