You know, the research shows that kids who kill their parents are almost 100% of the time responding to severe, ongoing abuse by the parent. Let's step back a little and wait until we hear what the circumstances were. Perhaps the finger of blame would more rationally go to the local social services agencies for perhaps not responding to issues in the family. 12 year olds don't just pick up guns and shoot their fathers for no reason. And yes, I also have to ask... where did the child get the gun? If the gun came from the home, why wasn't it safely locked up? Let's wait and see. No doubt there was some very serious dysfunction going on in this home and this child's life.

I often shop at Grocery Outlet (once or twice a month), and I enjoy an upper-middle-class income. I find it is a great place for non-animal-tested cosmetic type things like hand lotion, face cream and shampoo, and also a great place to find organic choices of canned goods, pasta, etc. There's always a pleasant surprise or two each time I go. For example, I recently found very good quality pet beds for $7.99 and bought quite a few for my local feral cat shelter. Give it a try! You'll be surprised!

Well ChrisH and everybody who thinks we can just somehow "intervene" in the Italian justice system... get a clue please! First of all, they are a sovereign country and we cannot simply somehow take over their trials!! (unlike what we did in Iraq)... second... you might want to check the facts about how many U.S. citizens are held IN JAIL awaiting their own trial conclusions!!! At least HALF the people in our jails are there BEFORE or DURING their own trials.

KATU - Portland, OR : Police: Man tortured woman pregnant with his child | KATU.com - Portland, Oregon | Local

And as you can probably imagine, males are much less likely to report their own victimization than females are (it's not macho at all to be victimized by your female partner) so reporting is very scarce by male victims. It definitely does happen though, we know that. And it's always about CONTROL... not anger... not substance abuse.. it's always about control, no matter the gender of the victim or of the perpetrator.

Well, pain has no gender, we know that for sure. The data on frequency of female-to-male domestic violence aren't as reliable as the opposite (which also aren't really reliable because of the victim's reluctance to report, and also neighbors and others seem reluctant to call police). The best and most consistent estimates by researchers indicate that about 90-95% of heterosexual domestic violence is male-to-female, but since only about 10% of domestic violence incidents are ever reported to police (we know this from victim surveys and estimates by researchers), it's really hard to say. There is a new study out which hints that perhaps in homosexual relationships, the partner who identifies most closely with "traditional masculine gender roles" is more likely to be the abusive partner, which is interesting. That's just an exploratory study at this point though.

Well I'm happy you agree Debbie, but my point here is, the community reading this blog can learn some lessons from this situation. I teach a class on Domestic Violence where we learn the facts. I'm just trying to help folks learn a bit from this all-too-common situation. This woman is lucky in a way, because on average, four women a DAY are actually KILLED by their abusers in this country. She'll probably not feel very lucky though until she gets her life turned completely around, which will be a monumental task. She needs loads of community support! Even people who don't know her can help, by supporting their local domestic violence shelter, and by reporting abuse whenever they have the slightest suspicion it is occurring. All of the local shelters need all the help they can get, and I've never spoken to a police officer who didn't express their desire that the public report any suspected cases of abuse.... they would much rather investigate and find out they weren't needed, than to have suspected abuse ignored by the neighbors or friends of the victim or abuser. We can all help!

I also pray that his victim has the strength and the unwavering support from others to actually leave, because, in spite of their promises, the vast majority of abusers do NOT change. They develop a pattern of abuse, followed by apologies, followed by more abuse. The victim needs safe shelter (whether a public shelter or relatives or friends) and time to re-structure her whole life. That's a very big job. If any of you know victims of abuse, please, please, support them if you can. Often the abusers threaten those who would help the victim as well. I pray that his victim has a strong and consistent support system to help her start over. Prayers aren't enough though. Her success will depend on the real and demonstrated strength of her support system. Abuse often starts, or escalates, when the victim is pregnant. I hope the community will learn some valuable lessons about domestic violence from this horrible situation (lessons such as, always report suspected abuse, and if you know someone you suspect is a victim, offer your unconditional support if you can). If you are so moved, local domestic violence shelters can always use volunteer help and donations of clothing, food or money (call your local shelter to find out their needs).

You are absolutely right WhenCowsAttack. Women often return to their abusers because of overwhelming fear, and also they have learned to hope he will change. They have learned this hope because the vast majority of abusers DO change... that is, temporarily... after each attack, they usually go through the "honeymoon phase" where they are thoughtful, considerate, often bring her gifts, apologize, so she has learned over time that he does change sometimes. It's usually a combination of fear and hope that causes her to stay. He will not change unless he admits he has a problem and gets long-term treatment (most abusers do not do this because they don't recognize they have a problem).
